CAROLINE BAUMAN Obituary
BAUMAN--Dr. Caroline. Dr. Caroline Bauman, Beloved Pediatrician and Advocate for Music and the Arts, Dies at 99. Dr. Caroline Bauman (born July 4, 1926), a pioneering physician, devoted community leader, and lifelong champion of the arts, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the age of 99. Dr. Bauman was among the few women of her generation to attend Downstate Medical Center -- then known as the Long Island College of Medicine -- where she earned her medical degree and, unlike most other women in her class, immediately began a distinguished career in pediatrics. She held a clinical appointment in pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was head of pediatrics at Blythedale Children's Hospital in the 1960s and 1970s. For more than six decades, she cared for generations of families with compassion, skill, and unwavering dedication. She established her private pediatric practice in White Plains, NY in 1954, and served as an attending physician at White Plains Hospital and St. Agnes Hospital. She was also the first school physician for the Yonkers and White Plains School districts, a position she held for more than 20 years. Dr. Bauman was interviewed by Charlayne Hunter-Gault on PBS for her dedication to caring for the underprivileged over successive generations. Remarkably, she continued practicing medicine into her 90s, embodying a deep commitment to service and compassion. Beyond her medical career, Dr. Bauman was a passionate advocate for music and education. She served as President of the Westchester Chamber Music Society for 50 years, bringing world-class ensembles to Westchester and fostering classical music appreciation throughout the New York metropolitan region. She also held leadership roles with the Westchester Conservatory of Music and the Holocaust Education Foundation, reflecting her lifelong belief in the power of culture and remembrance. A devoted member and former President of Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester, Dr. Bauman was celebrated for her wisdom, generosity, and strength of spirit. Her contributions to both medicine and the arts earned her numerous honors and the enduring respect of her colleagues and community leaders. Dr. Bauman was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Arthur Bauman, a distinguished physician-endocrinologist and educator, with whom she shared a life devoted to healing and learning. She is survived by her three children--Amy, Andy, and Billy--and was a loving grandmother to Alissa Heumann, Laura (Jared) Presberg, Jenny Heumann, Jeremy Bauman, Brittany Bauman, and Alex Bauman, and great-grandmother to Harlie and Cody Presberg. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched--patients, friends, and fellow music lovers alike--each a testament to a life lived with purpose, compassion, and grace. She will be sorely missed by so many who had the good fortune to know her. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate her extraordinary life. Contributions may be sent to the Westchester Chamber Music Society.
