CARYL FELDMANN

FELDMANN--Caryl D. Caryl D. Feldmann, (nee Fried), born in Brooklyn on April 8, 1934, to Tina Gorman Fried, a part-time librarian, and Henry B. Fried, the noted horologist, who lectured all over the world and wrote 20 books on that subject. She attended Abraham Lincoln High School and received both a BA and MS from Queens College plus 60 extra credits in subjects that were of interest to her. Married to Joseph "Skip" Feldmann her love and companion in world travel and adventure for 60 years minus 14 days. He died in 2015. Her two daughters are Leslie Cowen (Jim) and Sara Sheehan (Bobby) and grandchildren, Alex Cowen (Sisi), Madeline Scarpa (Matt) and Hanna, Oliver, and Lukas Sheehan. Her brother, Robert S. Fried, the pop artist, predeceased her in 1974. Caryl taught In Plainview three years before moving to Mamaroneck, where she taught sixth grade for 27 years. She and her co-teacher, Anna Kantor, wrote a proposal to the district for a team-teaching approach. It was approved and the wall dividing the classrooms was replaced by sliding doors and subjects were individually taught. When NASA wanted a teacher to be in Space, she applied and the district recommended her. In 1988, she wrote Gorbachev requesting that an exchange of teachers/ students between the Soviet Union and the USA and was granted an interview with the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to expedite it. The exchange was granted with the high school, not with the sixth graders. After retiring from teaching, she wrote a weekly column about the history of Mamaroneck and about notable residents. She also was a chairperson/arbitrator for FINRA. Caryl's funeral service will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023, 11:30am, at Larchmont Temple 75 Larchmont Ave., Larchmont, NY 10538. Shiva will also be at Larchmont Temple Monday, 3-5pm and 7-9pm and on Tuesday 7-9pm.
