CATHERINE ABATE Obituary

ABATE--Catherine M., The Board of Directors and staff of Community Healthcare Network (CHN) mourn the passing of our beloved and dynamic President and Chief Executive Officer. CHN was Catherine's passion, and we share her loss with the family, her husband Ron Kliegerman, son Kyle Kliegerman and his wife Lisa, and many dear friends to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences. She joined CHN 15 years ago following decades of work in the criminal justice field and after serving as the distinguished State Senator representing Chelsea and the West Village. She was a tremendous advocate for the health care needs of all those most at risk and a visionary and tenacious leader who always seemed able to marshal the resources for new and innovative programs. During her tenure, CHN quadrupled in size and moved from women's health services to offering a full range of primary care for individuals of all ages. Catherine wasn't satisfied with just being bigger, she inspired us all to want to be better. Thanks to her leadership, CHN pioneered successful new programs for teens, LGBT individuals and people with multiple chronic illnesses. She paved the way for all of CHN's clinics to receive FQHC status, Joint Commission accreditation and numerous other distinctions of quality and effectiveness. The CHN family remains committed to Catherine's lifelong dedication to social and economic justice in health care. Our loss is shared by all New Yorkers as we honor her invaluable contributions across a lifetime of public service.

I worked with Catherine at Legal Aid Society for many years
It seems appropriate to remember her again since we are having a 70s Re-Union this Saturday, May 18, 2019 of people who worked with her in the 70s.
Approximately 70 of us are gathering there including her husband, Ron Kligerman.
I am sure many of us will share fond memories of Catherine with each other while we are there.

I met Catherine when I represented her in a lawsuit against the Division of Human Rights. She was incredibly gracious, particularly since it was one of my first cases and first trial. Years later, I volunteered for her campaign as Attorney General, knowing that she would be amazing in that position. I would bring my infant daughter to campaign headquarters. One day, Catherine received some unfairly bad press and was visibly upset. She came out of her office and lovingly scooped my daughter from the floor. Catherine proceeded to return to her office, where she returned phone calls and met with staffers, all the while playing with my daughter on her lap. I have always remembered that image. My sincerest condolences to her entire family on the loss of a dedicated public servant and most gracious and caring human being.

I met Catherine when I was a young Assistant Attorney General and represented her in her capacity as Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Human Rights. She had no idea it was my first trial, and was so incredibly gracious. Years later, I worked on her campaign for Attorney General. I would bring my infant daughter to campaign headquarters. Once, after receiving some particularly bad press, she came out of her office, scooped my daughter up from the floor, and took the baby back to her office. Catherine played with her while returning more phone calls and talking to staff members. I never forgot that image. Please accept my sincerest condolences. She was really an extraordinary woman and a dedicated public servant.

I am one of the many individuals who partnered with Catherine on public health in NYC and was greatly touched by her grace, vision, commitment and dignity. Catherine improved so very many lives. It is my hope that her family takes some comfort from hearing more about that during this very difficult time. We will all miss Catherine greatly.

Please accept my most sincere sympathy. Cathy and I became friends from the first week of freshman year at Vassar. We were in Politcal Science classes together. She matched her intelligence, determination, and gracious beauty to real life political science. I am so very saddened by this dreadful loss. Although I am far away geographically, I hold her lovely self in my heart.

My heart breaks for this wonderful, intelligent, humble, good person. I met Catherine when she was a state senator in Albany during lobby day, she smiled and listen and acted. I knew then she was my friend for life. I really got to know her during her statewide campaign for State Attorney general when she ran for AG in '98 we bonded forever. She has meant so much for her family, friends, colleagues, constituents, and patients from all over New York. Ron, Kyle, Lisa, and family my family accompanies our profound sentiments. May G-d bless her and keep her spirit and you as you go through this extraordinary time. Marty, Samara, tony, Larry and I will always have the summer of 1998... Love Ken xo

Catherine Abate was simply an exceptional person who gracefully left her mark in so many ways. I will never forget when some of us tennis kids spent the weekend at the apartment on Mercer St. It was our first New York City experience and she made us feel so welcome and comfortable. I always think of her sitting on the court writing speeches while we trained. With all her civic responsibilities, her top priority was always being the most supportive tennis parent to Kyle. She was the calming influence that Kyle and Ron depended on so much in the hyper-competitive junior tennis scene. May she rest in peace.

So sorry for your loss. Catherine was such a good person. She hired me for an executive position at the NYC Probation Department. We kept in touch briefly after she left and went to Corrections. So sorry we did not keep in touch. For someone that worked in government she was unique because she was a good, caring person. God needed a good caring person in heaven and he has now taken her to be with him. Will keep her and the family in prayer. May God Bless you all.

Too soon to leave; heartfelt sympathy to her family. In the `90's our fight to save beloved Pier 84 (now rebuilt and a jewel of the Hudson River Park) was successful due to her passion, wisdom, and her understanding. Rest in Peace and thank you.

Over the many years that I'd known Catherine she always gave you a smile and acknowledge who you were. She had a keen memory of the advocacy an individual took part in. She will be missed but may her enduring spirit live on in each of us. Catherine was an example of true grit may she now rest in peace.

I am so sorry for your and our loss. I first knew Catherine in the late 1970's and 80s when she was a courageous and generous district leader. As she rose to greater positions of responsibility, her inner core of justice burned more brightly each year. She will be missed- as a leader and woman.

Having had the privilege of working with Catherine is one I will always recall. Her passion, transparency, compliance, wit, intelligence, grace, and charm are just a few of the qualities Catherine had that set her apart. Who could possibly ask for a better client. I will miss her very much, but am happy to know she has left CHN in such a wonderful position due to her unique skills and efforts. Our heartfelt condolences to Catherine's entire family from Rich Reibstein of Pepper Hamilton.
