Celia Ores Obituary

ORES--Celia. Dr. Celia Ores (nee Nuwendstern), a Holocaust survivor who became a pediatrician specializing in Cystic Fibrosis at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for 50 years, died September 8, 2025 in Manhattan. She was born in Dubienka, Poland, on May 5th, 1928. At age 12, Celia and her family fled the Nazi occupation to Russia, where they were sent to a Siberian gulag. After the war, Celia earned her MD in Bern, Switzerland, where she was one of two women in her graduating class of 200 men. Working alongside her mentor Dr. Dorothy Andersen, Celia focused on children with CF when life expectancy for the illness rarely extended beyond the early teens; today, the median life expectancy for patients with CF is 65. Celia is survived by her three children, Pauline (Michael McCaffery), David, and Michelle (Charles Schorin), and five grandchildren. Just this morning, after a conversation with our oldest daughter who's expecting a second child, I was thinking so fondly and appreciatively of Dr. Ores, as she had taken exceptionally good care of our girls when they were young. Agreeing that she had been exceptional, my husband looked her up-and found this news.

What a warm and caring and wonderful pediatrician Dr. Ores was. She was calm and reassuring from the very first day our first daughter was born. She went above and beyond to give us the best care and she made every visit a pleasure. She was rare and we loved her.
