The forth member of the house at Penn State finally signs the guest book. Charlie was a dear friend; notwithstanding our many years of little or no contact.

Charlie was correct that the four of us did not keep in touch much after the reunion. I did speak to him a few months back and learned of his mystery illness.

I am so thankful we had the reunion. It gave me one last fond memory of him and our friendship. Melou and I also got to meet Missy. She's wonderful and our thoughts are now with her. ----George

0issy and family- I always thought that we would be meeting up soon. Il looked forward to intellectual discussions with Charles in NYC and political discussions with you. Why do we delay? Charles was a "force of Nature", as one person described him. We did some crazy things with him, but, through it all, he was a seeker, intellectual and a great guy. I am sorry not to have time to meet up with him. I hope we will see you soon.

Dear Missy,
Lucy and I were saddened to hear of Charlie's death. Please accept our deepest condolences. Charlie was a bolt of energy, bringing enthusiasm and creativity to every situation. What made him so special, though, was his deep caring for people. He was a unique guy - we'll all miss him.

I knew Charles in the 60's in Louisville and then later in NYC and in Lexington. He was always a constant seeker of knowledge, a very witty, funny, compassionate friend, just a totally unpretentious
man with a golden mind and soul. I was blessed to have him in my life and will always keep him in my heart. My deepest condolences to his family.

Going back to my childhood with John in Baltimore, I always thought that Charles was such a great down to earth guy. He was the first person to humanize the image of a doctor for me. He was intelligent, humble, funny, open minded and curious and knowledgable about life in general. As I have grown older and made my way through years of medicine training I have only become more aware of what a unique person he was both as a doctor and as a human being. I will miss him.

Missy,

The best we leave behind in this life is the legacy of learning and friendship which Dr. Beattie brought to so many whose lives he touched. His guidance for me as my faculty advisor at Hopkins and again when he recruited me to Vanderbilt will leave an indelible print on my life, and I am much the richer for having known him and been touched by his wisdom and humor. Grace and peace to you and the children--

Charlie answered every question I posed about anesthesia or anesthesia machines with a smile. He was a true educator. We worked together for many years while he was at Hopkins and my science was better as a result of his contributions. Charlie was a dear friend and colleague I will miss him. My sincere condolences to his family.

I knew Charlie at Hopkins, and then I met him one Thursday night at Church of the Redeemer 14 years ago. His guidance and inspiration changed my life forever.
There has not been a day since then that I haven't thought about his wisdom, his humor, and his council. The world is a much better place because of Charlie Beattie.

Charlie Beattie and I spent our youthful years together. We lived on Third Street by Woodlawn. We both worked at Ben Franklin 5 and 10 store on Woodlawn. We worked for 50 cents an hour. I lost track of Charlie when I went to Murray State College. I was very proud to have known and to have grown up with Charlie. He was a good friend.

Dear Missy,
Deirdre and I were so saddened to learn of Charlie's death. We were particularly thrilled when he visited us here in Ireland and quickly engaged all he encountered. I along with a a number of other Irish fellows and faculty will always remember him for his tutelage and the opportunities he created to our own benefit and indirectly to many others further afield than you can imagine.

I clearly remember when I met Charlie, September '63, at Penn State and the remarkable friendship we forged. I cannot explain "the magic" (Charlie's words) of those Penn State years but all of us (the four housemates) shared it. I only saw Charlie a mere several times after our leaving State College but each time was special. Although our get togethers were infrequent, he was often in my thoughts and impacted greatly my world view.

Dear Missy:
I was so sorry to learn of Charlie's illness and then his death. There are no words to express the sadness that I feel. Charlie was a respected and beloved colleague for over 20 years. He will be missed.

Charlie Beattie was an extraodinary individual. I worked with him for many, many years while we both were at Hopkins and I always found it a pleasure to work with him. He was a clinical anesthesiologist, a teacher, a researcher, and an administrator. He did all these things far better than most, and most importantly, he did them unselfishly, with enthusiasm, with humor, with intelligence, and always for the good of our department and institution. He taught me much about many things and for that I am grateful. I am deeply saddenned by Charlie's passing and all I can say is that Anesthesiology, and our world has lost a very, very, good man.

Missey-
We share your deep sadness at this time. CB, as I called him, was a valued friend and mentor - he took me from knowing nothing in anesthesia to a pretty decent one. His enthusiasm for the practice of anesthesia was infectious. When the dust settles I hape there is a gathering where condolances can be expressed in person, along with some very pleasant and sometimes very humorous memories.

I have many, many warm, early memories of Charles in Louisville. I knew him at Beechmont Elementary School, Southern Junior High School, Louisville Male High School, and the University of Louisvillle. I have followed his career with great admiration and respect. He will always have a special place in my heart.

I knew Charlie during our years together at Hopkins. He was a mentor, a friend, a teacher and a role model. He was always respected as a great anesthesiologist and as a great human being. In turn he respected everyone, regardless of their position. Anyone who worked with him can come up with a list of humorous and witty “Charlie-isms” that he skillfully deployed, lightening an environment full of the pressures of saving lives. Many of my best memories of my working life are of working with him in the operating room. Everyone whose life he touched will miss him. His life was a “brilliancy”

Dear Missy,

Charlie had such a great effect on so many people across our profession. Insightful, honest, curious, humorous and yes, inspiring. From talking with him into the evening at various Hopkins' parties, to seeking his help in the OR - it was a privelege. He formed many a better anesthesiologist, and human being and I carry him in my practice daily. You and Hunter are in many of our prayers and we are thankful to have shared experience with Charlie.

I had the good fortune of training under the critical care anesthesia tutelage of Charlie. He inspired young residents and taught me clinical pearls that have served me well throughout my career. Charlie is a legend of Hopkins Anesthesiology and he lives on in the countless anesthesiologists and multiple departments that benefitted from his warmth and talent.

That we all knew him as "Charlie" says so much about him. Aside from his keen clinical mind, his skill in managing people, and his organizational talents, he was a man of humor and compassion. I had the good fortune of working with him at Hopkins and then on several other other projects. He was a patient teacher and a good friend. It is common for me to come across a difficult situation and remember something he said or showed me; Charlie is and always will be with me. Missy and sons, I will miss him.

Charlie was a great person, a great anesthesiologist, a great mentor, and a great leader in our specialty. His energy seemed to infiltrate folks and motivate them to achieve more. It is an honor to have known Charlie, be trained by Charlie, worked with Charlie and to have been able to call him friend. He is already missed!

Charlie and I grew up together from about age 5 or 6. Our paths diverged after college, but we always kept in touch and visited when possible.

His passing is like the removal of a bookend. All our memories are no longer shared, at least in this life. There is an ache in my heart. I miss my friend.

My sympathies to his loving family, Missy, John B, John W, and Hunter.

My prayers to the family for the loss of an individual filled with enthusiasm for life. Was fortunate to know him and work with him while at Hopkins where he initiated and conducted clinical research that had great impact on the field of cardiovascular anesthesia and the care of patients with major vascular diseases. He was a role model and a mentor to many a young anesthesiolgist. Will miss you, Charlie.

I will always remember Charlie Beattie. He was a mentor to me as a resident. Some have likened anesthesiologists as the MacGyver of the OR, thinking and acting by their wits and using what is at hand to accomplish the tasks. Charlie was one of the original MacGyvers. He taught me tricks that only his innovative mind could dream up. Later in my career I became a department chair and he was the first to call me to offer a hand or just someone to talk to. I will miss talking with Charlie.

In trying to describe Dr. Beattie to those who never met him, the one term that keeps coming to mind is "a force of nature". Working for him was exciting, occasionally challenging and sometimes terrifying! - but never dull. I feel very privileged to have known such a generous, high-spirited, brilliant man and I'll never forget him. Missy and sons, may God bless you and help you through this difficult time.

What a void there is in the world, now. Such a complex, kind, quirky and brilliant presence, he was. I was blessed to have known him. My prayers are with Missy and their sons - that friends and family stay near to help them cope. I will always think of Dr. Beattie and, I imagine, so will anyone who ever knew him.

There are no words to express the sadness I feel for you, Missy and your family. You have had a hard fight over the last few years, and there is no compensation for that. I hope you can find some peace someday soon. Although I didn't meet Charles, I felt like I knew him through you and your love for him. He is now your angel.
