CHARLES HOCHMAN Obituary

HOCHMAN--Charles B. B.A. Amherst 1956, magna, Phi Beta Kappa; J.D. Harvard Law School 1959, honors, Law Review; Stanford Law School, LLM, teaching fellow, 1961; retired senior partner and head of the Tax Department at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan - finally closed his eyes June 10, 2023. His education was financed by scholarships, fellowships, prizes, and hard work. He flipped burgers at a Jersey Shore boardwalk stand, where he was also the only bellhop in a six-story hotel with no elevator. He unloaded beer trucks at the Ballantine brewery in Newark, where he was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. His loves were his family, travel, fine restaurants, great theater, and football. After years of suffering, he sold his season tickets to the Giants and took the family to dinner at Lutece. He despised bad grammar, poor proofreading, intellectual laziness, and phony tax shelters. He is survived by his wife Fredrica, his children Hilary, Thomas (Devon Lockie), and Christopher, and his granddaughters Ruby and Una. A celebration of his life is planned for mid-September; contact family for details. To honor his memory, contact someone you haven't seen or spoken with recently, and say hello.

I worked under Charlie in the Stroock tax department in the 1980s. He made a huge impact on my career. I´ll never forget how slowly and carefully he read every line of a case when I brought my research results to him, puffing on a cigar as he read along. He once told me that I had found a case right on point but had neglected to read an important word in the decision: the word "not." I´ll never forget that- I never did that again. I miss his sense of humor still.- Cindy Goldberg Fine

I worked for David Finkelman for over 25 years and he just told me of CBH´s passing. I am sorry Rickie for your loss. Charlie was just one in a million and I have nothing but the greatest memories of him. A good man indeed! Rita Farrell

My condolences to the family. Although I did not know Charlie my husband Jon Mostel was a partner at Stroock. He passed away in October 2018. His birthday was close to Charlie´s. It was September 13.
May his memory be a blessing.

Charlie was my mentor and friend. We worked together for over 25 years. He was a pleasure to be with and work with - smart, witty, creative, and a little irreverent. We would spend hours together, generally in his office as he was the boss, working to solve a problem. But there was always time for discussion of Charlie's two favorite pastimes - travel and food. I would always marvel at the fact that Charlie could recall not only the details of every trip he ever took, but what he eat at every restaurant on the trip. He was a great friend and I will miss him.

In spite of not seeing each other for so long (because of distance) you´ve always been an important part of my (our lives-that of course includes Allan). You are and will be missed dear cousin and may you now rest in peace. And if there is a heaven share my love with all of our other loved ones up there with you. More love, Robbie
