CHARLES PEET Obituary

PEET--Charles D, Jr. Charles D. Peet Jr. died in his sleep in his Manhattan home on September 1, 2025, two days shy of his 90th birthday. Charlie was born in Brooklyn, NY and spent his childhood in Bronxville where he attended Riverdale Country School. He then went to Yale (Class of 1957) and Harvard Law School (Class of 1960). He worked at Milbank, Tweed, making partner in 1969, and moved his family to London for four years to start their UK office in 1979. He finished his career at Freshfields, reluctantly retiring in 2017. Charlie was a great athlete: he played quarterback on the Riverdale and Yale football teams; ran multiple marathons; and was an avid cyclist and a diehard skier. In 2005 he married the former Julie Meck Hamlin, having met her on an Amateur Ski Club of New York trip to Taos, New Mexico. They spent most winter weekends skiing at Snowbird/Alta, until Charlie was well into his 80s. Charlie was known for quoting Hamlet, but held some of Jim Croce's lyrics in equally high esteem. As one of his work colleagues wrote, "His subtle smile during intellectual jousting served as a constant reminder that having fun was as important as remaining professional." He is survived by his wife Julie, his daughters Alisa and Amanda, his grandchildren Sam, Lucy, Frankie, Molly, and Henry, as well as his stepsons Alex and Ben Hamlin, and step- grandchildren Henry and Charlotte.

Such sad news. Charlie was unique as a colleague and friend. At Milbank we knew him as "Charles D no period Peet". The NYT must print a correction. Condolences to his family.
