Charles Slane Obituary

1947 - 2021
Charles Joseph Slane passed away on Monday September 13, 2021 at age 74. After a late diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer, he died peacefully, surrounded by his children and the love of his family, grandchildren, nieces and friends at his daughter's home in West Chester, PA.

Charles was born in Yonkers, NY on June 10, 1947 to Donald and Helen (Spagnolo) Slane. The third of four boys he loved to share stories of his brothers and their shenanigans. He worked many odd jobs as a kid, as well as lettering in track and playing both basketball and football at East Paterson High School and went on to graduate with a BS from Rutgers University. Charles married his first wife Carolyn (Croxton) Slane on June 5, 1971 while attending Columbia University Law School. He graduated with a JD in 1972.

Charles worked as an attorney in New York City and welcomed his oldest daughter, Carrie Joyce in 1974 and his oldest son Charles Joseph, Jr. in 1975. In 1977, he was approached by Rite Aid Corporation and became General Counsel in Mechanicsburg, PA. He and Carolyn had their third child, Katie Joyce in 1977. Charles worked for 20 years with Rite Aid, eventually leaving to start a commercial real estate and development company with his brother Daniel Slane (d. May, 2020).

Carolyn passed away on August 20, 1999 from cancer. After moving to Columbus, Ohio, Charles married Robyn Lynch in March, 2001, where they had two children, Samuel Charles Lynch and Quinlan Kay Lynch. Charles worked on his "next big deal" in real estate development in New York and Ohio until his death in 2021. He was a respected and honored developer and attorney.

He is survived by his five children, Carrie (Jake) Zier, Chaz (Sheila) Slane, Katie (Steve) Dykstra, Sam Slane and Quin Slane and his brothers Bob and Larry Slane. His grandchildren include Carolyn, Aidan, Ryan, Owen, Natalie, Hunter, Chloe and Ava. They will miss his funny stories, inside jokes and laid back personality. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews along with lifelong friends.

A special thank you to Penn Medicine Hospice who provided comfort during his last few days. Hospice will always hold a special place in our hearts and all those friends and family who were instrumental in making his life easier in the last year.

A Celebration of Life invitation will be sent to friends and family in the next few days.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Brandywine Battlefield Park (www.brandywinebattlefield.org/donate)

So sad to hear about Charles passing, so close to Dan's. I enjoyed working with both of them on many development projects. They were stand up fellow and so respected. I will miss their funny jokes and caring participation. My best goes out to his children.
