CHARLES STENDIG

STENDIG--Charles W., age 99 years old, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024. He is remembered for his enduring impact, both in business and in philanthropy. Charlie was born and raised in Brooklyn, the only son of Irving and Rose Stendig. He served as a paratrooper in WWII before receiving a business degree from NYU through the G.I. Bill. Shortly after, Charlie began what would be an extraordinarily successful career in the furniture industry, with a focus on importing pieces from Europe. He is credited with introducing modern European furniture design to America, working directly with European designers to make products more appealing to the American market. He had showrooms across the country, including in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Charlie retired in 1976 at the age of 54. Charlie was married to Eleanore, the love of his life, for 56 years. They also worked together in the showrooms. Eleanore passed away in August 2012 and is remembered fondly for her generosity, volunteerism, and concern for those in need. Charlie and Eleanore were philanthropic leaders throughout their lives, supporting organizations such as UJA-Federation of New York, 92Y, Surprise Lake Camp, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), and Memorial Sloan Kettering. Even in his 90s, Charlie frequented the gym at 92Y three days a week. He was a collector of antiquities, and though he donated most to museums, he kept a few favorites in his home. Charlie maintained relationships around the world, but his favorite place was Helsinki. Charlie was a loyal and fierce friend.
