Charles Stewart Obituary
STEWART--Charles Thorp, of Gulf Stream, Florida, formerly of New York City and North Berwick, Scotland, died on January 19, 2008. Cause of death was a heart attack. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on February 14, 1918. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Carry Stewart, a daughter Jenifer J. Stewart of Falmouth, ME and a son, C. Even Stewart of New York, NY, a granddaughter, Charlotte Stewart, and two brothers, George B. Stewart of Kennebunk, ME and Edwin C. Stewart of Savannah, GA. He was divorced from his first wife, the former Jenifer Barbour. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Cornell University and Yale Law School. He was associated with the law firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore before becoming General Counsel of R.H. Macy and then Senior Vice President, General Counsel and a member of the Board of Directors of J.C. Penney Company, Inc. He also served on the Board of Directors of Inmont Corporation. During World War II he served first as a private in the U.S. Army and then as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy where he was assistant counsel in the Bureau of Aeronautics and later was special assistant to the General counsel of the Navy Department. He served as a trustee of Cornell University for 20 years where he was Vice Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Executive Committee. He chaired the Yale Law School Fund and was a visiting professor at Yale Law School and an adjunct professor of law at New York University School of Law. He was also chairman of the YMCA of Greater New York. He was a director of the Legal Aid Society in New York City and the United States Chamber of Commerce. In the 1950s he was active in the Young Republican Club of New York, serving as its Chairman in 1952. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the American Law Institute and the American Arbitration Association as well as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He was an avid curler and golfer. He belonged to the University and Cornell Clubs in New York City, The Country Club of Florida in the Village of Golf, FL, The St. Andrews Club in Delray Beach, FL, the Little Club in Gulf Stream, FL and the North Berwick Golf Club in North Berwick, Scotland. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Delray Beach on Saturday, February 9 at 2pm. Contributions may be made to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY or to Yale Law School, New Haven, CT.
