CHARLOTTE LICHTBLAU Obituary

LICHTBLAU--Charlotte, 1925 2013. Renowned painter Charlotte Lichtblau died December 18th in New York City. Born in Vienna in 1925, Charlotte (Adelberg) Lichtblau came to the United States in 1940 with her parents and sister Doris. She lived and worked in New York City from 1953. Following her emigration to America, she returned repeatedly to her native country, primarily to Vienna and to her childhood summer home in Altaussee, in Austria's Salzkammergut region. Over a career spanning six decades, Lichtblau exhibited in galleries, museums, universities, and churches throughout the US and Austria. For more than four years, she had weekly drawings in America Magazine. Lichtblau was an art critic, as well, writing for The Philadelphia Inquirer, New York Herald Tribune, Arts Magazine, and other publications. Her collected reviews are archived at the Smithsonian Institution. She had two major career retrospective exhibitions in Austria, one at the Palais Palffy in Vienna (1994) and the Pfarrheim Arts Center in Bad Aussee, near Altaussee (2002). A planned career retrospective in 2000 led to the publication of Origin and Transformation: Life and Art of the Painter Charlotte Lichtblau by Albert Lichtblau (no relation). Charlotte Lichtblau's work is represented in museums and private collections across the United States and Europe. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, John (Hans) Lichtblau, daughter Claudia Payne (Robert Roden), sister Doris Orgel (Dr. Shelley Orgel), nieces, nephews and family. Services will be Monday, December 23rd at 10am at Holy Trinity Church, 213 West 82nd St, New York City.

I've long considered meeting and working with Charlotte as one of the great blessings of my life. Every few weeks she would bring a packet of drawings to my office at America magazine and we would review them together. Her work inevitably shed new light on a familiar Scripture passage, and she delighted in hearing what her work elicited in the viewer. The vigorous intensity of her drawings and the rich depth of her palette underscored her passionate faith and challenged many (myself included) to experience faith with fresh eyes. Her absence leaves a gaping hole in our lives, but her powerful images will continue to invite us to ponder mystery and stand in awe. My prayers for Hans, Claudia, and all those who love her as together we commend her to God's eternal embrace.
