Charlotte Parkinson Obituary

PARKINSON--Charlotte B., 71, died September 25th from peritoneal cancer. She was born in Manhattan, attended Milton Academy and graduated from Barnard College. She received her masters in social work from NYU and her doctorate in social welfare from Columbia University. Dr. Parkinson worked for several social service agencies including the Burden Center for the Aging, Search and Care, and Catholic Charities. She was most recently in private practice, specializing in aging and the disabled. She served as a board member for YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities; the Society for the Relief of Women and Children, for which she wrote a book of the organizations history and accomplishments; and the American-Italian Foundation. In 1992 she was appointed to the President's Committee on Mental Retardation. She also served on the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art and was a member of MOMA's Education Committee and its Library and Archives Council. Charlotte had a passion for competitive bridge and recently achieved life master status. She also enjoyed the opera, tennis, traveling, and playing the piano and accordion. She is survived by her three children, John B. Parkinson of Honolulu, HI, Allston B. Parkinson of Singapore, and Beth Parkinson-Wyner of Falls Church, VA.; four grandchildren; and her beloved spaniel Emmet. A memorial service will be held on October 27th at 4pm at All Souls Unitarian Church in Manhattan, 1157 Lexington Ave at 80th Street.
