Christopher Meyer Obituary

MEYER--Christopher, age 28, died August 8th, 2009 of a brain tumor that was first diagnosed in 2002. During those seven years, his illness never diminished the power of his intellect and he never defined himself by his illness. He lived all of his life with grace, humor and a sunny disposition. In 2003 he finished his B.A. in art history at Stanford and was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa. He was a semi-finalist for a Rhodes scholarship. He was a sports writer for The Stanford Daily covering men's tennis. Chris had been a member of the 1999-2000 team when Stanford was the NCAA Champion as well as the 2001-2 team when he returned from spending his junior year in Paris. While in Paris, Chris had been an intern at the Musee D'Orsay and Rodin Museum. He spent the summers of 2002 and 2003 in Antibes, France as a counselor for Abbey Road, an exchange program for American teenagers In 2004, he graduated from Stanford with a M.A. in Humanities. He was a research assistant at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. In 2005, he began a Ph.D. program in art history at Harvard and received a Harvard Presidential Fellowship. He also received a Mellon Fellowship that same year. While at Harvard, he successfully completed his course work, acted as a teaching fellow, submitted his qualifying paper, received a Mellon summer fellowship at the Getty Museum in 18th Century studies and completed his orals. This year he finished most of the first chapter of his dissertation. Most importantly during those seven years, he met and married Monica Lara Cordoba. Christopher and Monica brought out the best in each other just as Christopher has brought out the best in all of us and just as he has always demanded the best of himself. We are going to miss him so very much. Christopher is survived by his wife, Monica, of San Francisco; his parents, Michael and Tina, of Berkeley; his brother, Joshua and his sister-in-law Fleur and his nephew, Theodore, of Paris, France.

Dear Chris

I still can't believe you left us, and reading the condolence on this guest book makes me cry and I couldn't even finish reading them all . . .

I believe that you can still hear my message from wherever your soul is taking a rest. You and Monica were the most beautiful and nice couple I ever met. I was so moved to see how much you and Monica supported and cared for each other. You also cared about other people who were in need. It made me a deep impression that you made a fund and Monica for people who need dental help instead of accepting wedding gift.

I'll be badly miss you, but I wish you are having a good rest under peace.
We will remember your sweet smile and warm heart forever.

Gracias Chris.

I do not have any words in my head to comfort, to avoid sadness or to bring peace for those who suffer right now. I just want to express that all the love we feel for Chris and all the love he gave us, will remain forever among us and hopefully, it will inspire us to live a better life, to be better human beings and enjoy happiness when we have it around us. He was my favorite brother and I will miss him, but I will draw a smile on my face whenever I think of him.

I was moved by this obituary and I didn't even know Christopher. I am a fellow young art historian, on a similar career path, who is humbled by his accomplishments in such a short time. I sense a great loss in his passing.

I used to work with Dr. Lara as her assistant. Last Christmas, I received her wedding's photos. In the photos, her husband and she were so young, beautiful, happy, and in love. This is picture that I will keep in my mind whenever I think about you, my dear Dr. Lara. I miss you and wish you will be strong.

I only had two opportunities to spend time with Chris but know him like a brother through my sweet friend Monica. Though his time was so short his light was bright and will forever shine in all of our hearts. My deepest condolences to Moni, his parents, brother and extended family.

Since our children attended the same grade school, I have shared many of Chris's life events through his mother. He was indeed an exceptional person. He will be missed but not forgotten.

I have had the opportunity to express my condolences to Monica, my dear life-long friend, but I want to take this opportunity to extend my condolences to the rest of Chris's family as well. I had the opportunity to spend some time with Monica and Chris in Washington DC and Mexico, and in very short time I realized how great and a full of life person Chris was, one that made my dear friend Monica incredibly happy. I am truly sorry for this loss. Mon, cuenta conmigo siempre.

Chris made me laugh at every turn - I will miss our long phone conversations and his wonderful smile.

I did not get to know Chris' family, but send my deepest heartfelt thoughts and prayers your way. I knew Chris from France - we had an amazing summer.
