A year since his untimely death, Dan feels closer than ever. He was my editor and publisher for twenty years, and his living spirit is more than ever there today. My current project began over a year ago, encouraged from the start by Dan. "Jerry," he wrote even from the hospital, "send me more. This is your best work yet." However that may be, it will be our work.

Patty, it has been a very long time since I saw you and Dan at your home in Croton-on-Hudson. I am so sorry to hear of Dan´s passing and remember so fondly working with him at Harcourt Brace. His laugh was contagious, his love of words fierce and remarkable. My sympathy to you and your family.
