DANIEL SHANNON Obituary

SHANNON--Daniel Charles, MD. Daniel Charles Shannon, MD, age 86, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022 after a valiant battle with lymphoma. Dr. Shannon was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, attended Xavier University and Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago. He served as pediatrician at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts before becoming a Teaching Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Shannon was a physician-scientist who made significant contributions to pediatric healthcare. He developed one of our nation's first Intensive Care Units for infants and children, and also founded the Pediatric Pulmonary Division at MGH. Through groundbreaking research and clinical practice, he introduced new procedures to pediatrics which remain the standard of care today. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at MGH. In 2014, he authored "Innovations in Pediatrics, Massachusetts General Hospital 1910-2010". As a founding faculty member of the Harvard-MIT Health, Science and Technology Program (HST), Dr. Shannon helped develop this widely influential model for medical education. He vividly taught his students the power of integrating medicine with basic science and engineering to advance human health. As Director of Admissions and Faculty Development, he helped build an exceptionally diverse and rigorous HST community to promote collaboration and health equity. Dan is remembered for his kind manner and gentle humor, his way of telling a good tale and his love of sweets. He was an avid reader, distance swimmer, theater/opera enthusiast, pianist, art collector, fine woodworker, gardener, home cook and "'70s bread baking Dad". Also, he enjoyed the St. Botolph Club and the Sherlock Holmes Society. Dan is survived by his wife, Marcia D. Lloyd of Boston, Massachusetts. Also by his children with his late wife: John D. (and Miranda) Shannon of Amherst, Massachusetts, Catherine (Kate) V. Shannon of Kailua Kona, Hawaii and Sarah A. Shannon (and Ricardo Rodriguez) of Brooklyn, New York and his grandchildren: Tatiana, Olympia, Uma, Liam and Max Shannon and Aiden and Quinn Rodriguez; also by dear cousins, nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his late wife, Mary (O'Donnell) Shannon and their daughter, Maura Shannon Barrett. Also, his parents, Daniel J. and Lenora (Krollmann) Shannon, and his sisters, Mary Jeanne Lucky and Kathleen A. Menke. Sadly, his brother Timothy J. Shannon passed away three weeks after Dan.
