I was fortunate to present to Stern in 1997 during my PhD. His thinking and writing has and is a constant inspiration. I still wait for his next book.

He was most attentive to my special needs.. We have special connections: his father was my mother's high school classmate out in Long Island.
I will miss him terribly.

I began analysis with Dan Stern when I was a young medical student and he was a candidate in analytic training at Columbia University. Having been orphaned in childhood and placed into foster care, my experience with early loss matched his passion about early development, and his warmth and caring allowed me to reconnect to the world and rebuild my life. My condolences to his family and his colleagues who knew him in very different capacities.

I have no doubt Daniel Stern's research and written work made me a better child analyst.

My sincere condolences to the Stern family. It is hard to lose someone close to us.
But please know that God does not forget our loved ones or us as we have to cope with this loss. We are encouraged to throw all our anxieties upon him because he cares for you".

Dan was Great Neck HS '52 and I was '50. He lived on (or just off) Fairview Avenue and I was fortunate to occasionally meet up with him walking to school. He was a lovely, warm acquaintance, brilliant as well. He preceded me at Einstein and it was already clear that he would contribute greatly to the psych literature. No surprise that this sweetheart of a guy found his way to working with babies and children. His legacy is secure.

Thanks, Dr. Stern.

Dan's work lives on in the lives of so many around the world who have used his clarity to make sense of intervention. My study with him in 1989 changed the course of my career. Many of the principles in our Circle of Security protocol for parents are built on the deep coherence that Dan offered. With gratitude, Kent Hoffman

I am so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. Any attempt to catalogue his influence on the understanding of early development and the basic process of emotional communication in adults risks understatement. Any time spent with Dan, in conferences, Boston Change Study Group functions, etc. left participants with clearer thinking with regard to what we take in from others and how we accomplish that taking in that is salient to emotional growth. Dan boldly defined the molecule of interaction which he termed the present moment. His conceptualizaion of the moment is a key element of his creative legacy. I am grateful for the nourishment provided by his amazing mind. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

After being a student of yours at the Einstein Institute I found you across the road at Lonelyville, Fire island. You were generous with your thoughts on why Dance Therapy was particularly effective and aided me in a conference I was chairing by sharing your mother child infant research with me. This was in 1989. I have never fogotten these words of yours- regarding vitality as a use of self and how Dance therapy "kicks the client up to a higher orbit package." I am a psychotherapist now and your work will always inform mine. I am so sad to learn of your passing.

Those of us who worked and played with Dan, read and marveled at his modest genius, the intricate seemingly insignificant pieces of baby/mother data that he interwove so brilliantly to form new fields of psychoanalytic inquiry and observation that have enriched us all.

I personally am grateful for the time spent in his lab at Cornell in the 70's and 80's, when he and Susan Baker Stern went out of thier way to see that I became not only a better musician and clinician, but a wife and a mother of two magnificent children.
Enjoying this Renaissance man truly enriched my entire life, for which I will remain forever thankful.
