DARIO GALINDO Obituary

GALINDO--Dario. A Partner at Brown Brothers Harriman since 2003, Dario Galindo passed away peacefully on August 8, 2023 at the age of 74. A resident of Greenwich, CT, Stonington, CT and Lake Memphremagog, located in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada, Dario was the husband of Elizabeth Merifield Galindo (Betsy) to whom he was married for nearly 45 years. He is also survived by his two brothers, Jaime and Hernan Galindo, both of Miami, and his nephew, Juan Carlos Ayala, the son of his late sister, Maria Eugenia Galindo Ayala. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Dario moved to the United States at the age of two and later attended the Fay School in Massachusetts for his primary school education and the New Hampton School in New Hampshire for secondary school where he remained an active alumnus. Dario went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his Bachelor and Master of Business Administration degrees. Dario spent his entire career in international banking. In 1975, he joined the Royal Bank of Canada in Montreal where his focus was on international credit markets. It was there that he met his beloved wife and in 1978, they would relocate to New Canaan, CT so Dario could join Chemical Bank in New York. He would remain at Chemical Bank for nearly ten years, until 1987 when he joined Brown Brothers Harriman. At BBH, he had broad responsibility for the firm's business activities in Latin America, with particular focus in the areas of Corporate Banking, Investor Services, and Investment Management. From the start of his tenure at BBH, Dario made a concerted effort to cultivate relationships with entrepreneurs and family holding companies throughout Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, and Mexico. After about five years, the firm recognized these efforts and his early success by forming a separate Latin American Banking Division centralizing all BBH product delivery to the firm's Latin American clients. Services included wealth management, trust, private equity and US and international securities custody for private pension funds and wealthy families. Dario was dedicated to BBH and to developing the firm's relationships with clients throughout Latin America. He travelled extensively and tirelessly on behalf of the firm. Mentorship came naturally to Dario, and he believed deeply in the importance of positively influencing and assisting others by guiding their professional and personal development. He was a longtime member of The Links in New York and was an avid sportsman. His frequent 4-mile treks between Grand Central Station and BBH's Broadway office were legendary. While very private about his favorite team (the Boston Red Sox from his formative years at New England boarding schools), Dario was a devoted baseball fan, traveling annually with friends, BBH colleagues and their children to spring training in Florida to watch pre-season games and track the best prospects coming through the system. Never one to sit still, when not traveling the globe, Dario was most likely to be sailing the waters off the coast of Stonington, ambling through the streets of this historic Connecticut village where he and Betsy had a weekend retreat, or golfing and swimming at their lake house in Canada. The memorial service will be private.

Of the numerous wonderful memories we have of Dario, perhaps the one that stands out the most, is the time we were blessed to be with him and Betsy in London, on the 16th and 17th of May 2023. Joe and Terry

Dearest Betsy - Somehow my original efforts to post resulted in duplicate photos of Dad and Dario (2017). I also wanted to share this photo of them in 1968 following Dario´s win of the Newfound Regional Golf Tournament. Dario was part of our family. He `taught me to drive´ (as a toddler on his lap) and was present for so many seminal moments in our family´s journey. His love of my Dad and the New Hampton School ensured that my father´s legacy would go on to help so many other young people experience prep school and explore new possibilities for their futures. News of Dario´s death, especially having just lost Dad last December, is shocking and heartbreaking. I cannot even begin to imagine how it is for you. Please know the Stern family has their arms wrapped around you. Much love, Jenny

Dearest Betsy - I am shocked and overwhelmed to learn this news and my heart is truly broken. Dario is part of our family and I am blessed to have known him all these years. He 'taught me to drive' (as a toddler in his lap! ) and has been present for so many seminal family events over the years. Losing my Dad last December was devestating, but Dario helped ease the pain by sharing memories and helping ensure my father's legacy as an educator and advocate for youth was not lost. Dario's wonderful, sweet, caring persona will endure in my heart forever. My deepest condolences to you and the family at this very difficult time. Much love - Jenny

Dearest Betsy - My heart is broken to learn this news, especially after losing my Dad last December. Dario was a member of our family. He 'taught me to drive' (as a toddler in his lap, of course!) and has been part of so many of our seminal family moments. I know my Dad loved him very much. I am so grateful to Dario (and you) for the steadfast love and support you've shown our family and making sure my father's great work as an educational leader was not lost. We were blessed to know Dario most of his life (and all of mine!)
Sending you my deepest condolences for a loss that cannot be described. Much love - Jenny

Dear Betsy, since we were teenagers in Bogota, we truly enjoyed each others company, whether it was playing golf, going to the discotheque, the Country Club´s Anniversary Dinner Dance, or just having a meal at his home or ours, will be something I will never forget. Then when I got married in Atlanta in1971 I was so happy to have him join us. We kept in touch over the years and in October 2018 Terry and I had the privilege to meet you, and spend a wonderful week together in your home in Greenwich. We also feel so blessed to have spent almost two marvelous days with the two of you in London. Both Terry and I miss him and send you as we say in Spanish "a gran abrazo", and both of you will always be special to us. Joe and Terry

Dear Betsy. Muy most sincere condolences for the truly unexpected death of my lifelong friend Dario. We became friends in 1982 when I was starting my career in finance, after switching from economics, and Dario, then at Chemical Bank, was a personal instructor into a world I barely new.
Over the years we kept a close relationship so much so that my children refereed to him as "Uncle Dario". We will miss him. Big hug.
