DAVID GRESSEL Obituary

GRESSEL--David Aaron. David Aaron Gressel died of lung cancer on September 18, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 74. Born in Cleveland, Ohio to beloved parents Norma and Alan Gressel, David received his bachelor's and master's degrees from MIT and spent most of his life in NYC. In 1991, he founded cfX, a housing finance advisory firm that helped many thousands of borrowers achieve affordable home ownership. A brilliant intellect with an unparalleled understanding of the forces that shaped history, he suffered from what he saw as the gradual triumph of greed over goodness and impunity over justice. He was kind, generous, and funny; a lifelong lover of jazz, especially bossa nova, and classic cinema. A world traveler, he'd visited nearly 70 nations and was happiest on the beach. He is survived by his wife, Rika Yu, his sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Harold Madorsky, and his nephews, Ben and Alex Madorsky. His three daughters, Anna, Madeline, and Daliah Gressel, were the lights of his life, and he left this world with the words "I've been such a lucky man." Memorial to follow. I lived in Dave's shadow at Shaker. He was so smart, so driven to improve our world, so articulate. He challenged me in a million good ways. Thank you, David.

Here's to a fellow jazz fan: "I'll be seeing you..."

After Shaker, I also saw him from time to time at MIT. He was enthusiastic, kind, energetic, and full of life.

He was brilliant. One of a kind.

I knew Dave only during his days at Shaker Heights High School, but the description of his life after high school tracks EXACTLY with the way I knew him: Smart enough to go to MIT and kind enough to know instinctively how to put his smarts to work to build a better world. In short, a good human being.
