DAVID HELPERN Obituary

HELPERN--David Moses Sr., scholar, businessman, and philanthropist, died peacefully at age 94 on May 14th, 2012. Born on November 14, 1917, he was co-founder and Chairman of the eponymous Joan and David Inc., which grew from its start in 1967 to become a global fashion brand. David grew up in Brookline, MA and attended Boston Latin School. His mother, Rose, was a concert pianist turned music teacher, his father, Myron, a scientist and businessman. He was one of five children, with a brother, Saul, and three sisters, Miriam, Ruth, and Leah. He graduated from Harvard, where he studied European History, in 1938 and continued on to a Masters degree at the Harvard School of Education. He served proudly in World War II in the Philippines and Japan as a Sergeant in the radar corps. David believed strongly in the importance of education and equality. He was a supporter of Boston Latin School and Harvard School of Education, as well as civil rights causes, the arts and medical charities. David was a great lover of music, both classical and jazz. Most of all, he was kind and generous man. He was much loved by, and is survived by, his children, David Jr. and Elizabeth, their spouses, Ann Helpern and Adam Lass, his grandchildren, Noah, Jane, and Emily Helpern and many nieces and nephews. Please send donations in honor of David to the fund established in his father's name: The Myron E. I, too, worked for David Helpern back in the 70's. He was a kind and gentle man. May he rest in peace. My sympathy to David jr., and Elizabeth and all of his family. I have always remembered him with fond respect.

I was a proud employee of Joan & David in Everett Ma many years ago. I am sorry to hear of the loss of David. He was a gentle man, and very much respected. He will be missed.

Dear Joan ,
I was truly saddened to read of David's death . In the mold of my father he was " a good man " . He treated me with kindness , a raised eyebrow when I needed it and a pat on the back when it was deserved .
I worked for you and David starting in 1970 ...in Cambridge ....the office was upstairs in Touraine's on Brattle Street . I knew even then that he would have a place in my mind and heart .Forty plus years later I still remember him fondly. Best regards ,
Chuck Motta .

Hello Joan ---

Although you and I never knew each othere, and my connedtions with David were few and far between, we did share much of a lifetime at Touraine Stores.
You don't need me to tell you that whenever there was a sale at the Touraine store in Cambridge, all of my friends who might turn up their noses at the idea of buying ANYTHING from Touraine would rabidly await the openingof the door on Tueday morning.
I have completely lost touch with Saul --- in the event you and he are in contact, please extend my condolences.

Dear David Jr. and Family,

I am so very saddened to hear of your Dad's passing.

David Sr. was the epitome of a total and complete gentleman in every sense of the word!

I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend time getting to know David Sr. on both a professional and personal level. I have always regarded him as one of the most brilliant men I have ever had the pleasure of working with and will treasure those memories for the rest of my life.

I know you consider yourselves very fortunate to have had so many years together with such an incredible man with whom you created so many wonderful memories to cherish.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

You now have the world's most incredible Guardian Angel watching over you and your family.
