DAVID LANGLEY Obituary

LANGLEY--David Darrell. On Saturday, November 20, 2021, David Darrell Langley, loving father, and influential NYC commercial photographer for over 45 years passed away at age 88. Born in New York, NY to Roy and Mary Langley, Dave attended Cornell University. By chance, he found photography out of school working as a chauffeur with the Tappan Zee thruway project. A fortunate encounter led to an unfamiliar responsibility of capturing the project on 16 mm film. It changed his life, and launched Dave into a successful five decade long career as a Commercial Photographer who quickly became a favorite of Madison Avenue advertising agencies. He completed over 5000 assignments worldwide, influencing and inspiring many of his crew who launched their own successful careers. In later years, he made beautiful and original birdhouses. He spent his last two living in Washington State sharing and teaching his passion for woodworking with his daughters. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lawrence. He is survived by his ex-wife/friend and mother of their children, Liz, his three children, Adam, Sarah, and Jennifer, his grandson, Silas, and his sisterin-law, Gail. Dave's wish was to be cremated and his ashes scattered in the Hudson River. This will take place in the summer of 2022. Per his request a funeral service in not planned.

It was early 1980's and I took a night class through the School of Visual Arts in NY City which David taught at his studio on West 50th Street. I walked in through that blue door the first evening and a Volvo was on set and lit for a still advertisement. They still had the lights on and that car beautifully glowed. I gasped and told myself that somehow I had to find a job here. Each week I arrived early and offered to set up the chairs for the class. I got to know the Studio Manager and asked if there was an internship position available. I eventually got called as a freelance assistant and after a week, David gave me a shot at full time. I'll never forget that. I learned a lot from David and worked hard. The harder the work, the more enjoyable it was. He was patient yet held a high bar expecting good work from us assistants and he was also generous. We could use his studio on weekends to produce images to improve our portfolios as assistants and eventual photographers.
David and I both got a kick that one day I was a school photographer and the next Monday an assistant at Langley Studio. Then mere weeks later he promoted me to Studio Manager. I was thrilled, everything happened so fast. Langley Studio was the Land of opportunity.
I later moved on to other Advertising studios as is the norm in New York, learning different styles and business practices with each one. This launched me into a career as a professional photographer in 1986 , and years later remembering my path which places David at the beginning and the person who took a chance on me and in turn helped me launch my career.
I will always have fond memories of David. He was a great man to know and work for.
Peace be with you David.
