DAVID SCHERMERHORN Obituary

SCHERMERHORN--David Ker.

In 2008 sailed on the first foreign boat to enter Gaza Harbor in 40 years, died on August 27 in San Francisco, age 89. An avid outdoorsman, he made 12 trips to the Arctic, skiing to the North Pole at age 76, despite frostbite, pneumonia, and three broken ribs. Born in New York City in 1929, he produced commercials for 35 years, retiring to Orcas Island, WA in 1996. David lived by words of his friend, ACLU founder Roger Baldwin who said: "Never lose your sense of wonder." He was more than twice my age and I did not even have half of his energy! What a force of nature David was. I am honored to have known and worked with him. When I get back to Gaza (and I/we will!), I will be holding David and our mutual friend and comrade who passed last year, Darlene Wallach, in my heart. Rest in peace and power dear friend! My deepest condolences to David's family. Strength and solidarity. xx

David was a good neighbor in Malibu, a good husband to Joan and a good father to Kate and David. His energy seemed to know no bounds. He will be missed.

At 79 carrying ship engine parts in 100 degree heat like a 20-yr-old. Eating boiled reindeer with the Chukchi in Siberia. Broke the mold.

So sorry he passed before I got to spend more time with him! His gentle, loving spirit touched me deeply and I am a better person for knowing him, no matter how short the time. A true child of the universe, he stayed human till the end. Prayers for his family.
