David Sloan Obituary

1947 - 2021
SLOAN, David (Arthur) - Born in Jackson Heights, New York, on September 25, 1947, to parents Arthur William and Barbara (Griffin) Sloan. Died at Stony Brook Medicine Hospital, Long Island, New York, on February 8, 2021, of cardiac-pulmonary arrest with loved ones by his side and on video-call.

David went to high school in Bedford, N.Y., and graduated in 1966. He was a political science major at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA. He had an extensive career in publishing from his early days with the Patent Trader in Mount Kisco, N.Y. to his position as Editorial Operations Director with Fortune Magazine at Time Warner, along with assignments with Sports Illustrated, Time, Money, People, and Time & Life Books. At Fortune, he was known as the buffer between personalities, the guy to get the job done and someone who never got ruffled.

David was an avid golfer and bridge player. He enjoyed his time in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where he could banter in the Spanish slang he learned growing up in a small town in the Andes Mountains of Peru (12,287 feet above sea level). David loved the sea and was always proud to invite others to his beautiful porch-wrapped home in Orient.

The memory of David will be forever treasured by his immediate family: sister Leslie Sloan Lambropoulos, brother-in-law Costas Lambropoulos, niece Christina Lambropoulos of Stroudsburg, PA, and his extended family in Alaska and Philadelphia, PA. David will be sadly missed by: long-time partner and forever friend Judy McDonald of Ottawa, Canada; former wife and lifetime friend Carol Sloan of Manhattan, N.Y.; friends Donald Biglands, Gerry Benedicto, Carol Gwinn; neighbors Edwin Blesch and Tim Smulian of Orient, N.Y., and devoted friend/caregiver Kate (Kassaraporn Abouloula). He will be fondly remembered by his Time Warner family of colleagues.

Memorial arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Donations can be directed to: Salvation Army Executive Headquarters, 120 W 14th St, New York, NY 10011, United States.

It was a great sense of loss when I heard of David’s death. I spoke with him one week before his death and promised him I would see him when he goes home from hospital.
I worked with David for 15 years. He was best manager I had ever had. He was smart, kind, with great sense of humor.
David was more than just a wonderful person; he was part of my family. Outside of work, Judy and David would come to our home for Sunday brunch. We all had great times.
David will always remain within my heart.
My sincere thoughts and prayers are with you.
With deepest sympathy,

Last time my husband John and I had the chance to see David was Christmas 2019. Judy and Dave came to our place for a pre-dinner drink before a pizza-dinner at the Collonade, center-town Ottawa. We had a grand time, enjoyed a couple of Negronis in the living-room and chated away as we always do... Then the four of us squeezed into Judy's brand new car to the restaurant. We had a wonderful time and a memorable dinner that David paid before we had a chance to do so. Little did we know...
We will miss him for years to come, specially at Christmas time!
Warmest of regards and condoleances to Judy and Dave's family.

My train time with David was never dull or boring, he could rip through the NYT crossword as if it were child’s play. We joked, told stories, and entertained the other passengers along the trip.

David and I tried to golf, took lessons, and still sucked at it, but always enjoyed the time on the links. At work I could always count on David’s help with whatever magazine closes was blowing up at the time, and yes “Buffer” was nice to have between you and management above.

My family was able to use the Orient house occasionally, enjoying the Point and surrounding area. David always offering Mexico, but we never managed to coordinate it. I remember times at his Mom’s condo hearing stories (loudly) and about David growing up, his Dad and the boating they loved together.

David will be missed. My condolences to all. Jeff

My Dear David, I am so sorry that we were unable to meet up once more though we did try. I have been missing you for a few years now but we did keep in touch & communicate and we always shared a warm affection & true friendship through all the years at Fortune & beyond. I am forever Blessed & Grateful for our Friendship. I will always miss you & your fun sense of humor ~ your teasing phone calls pretending to be the IRS or some other "agency" to alarm me....but you always charmed me.....we were buddies in & out of the office. "The Office" on tv could easily have based John Krasinski's character on you....always bridging all of the players at Fortune to get things done without drama but with a great sense of quiet strength & witty humor. Your love of the water & being at peace in your go-to-place in Orient Point resonates with me. And I adore Judy ~ your love & commitment to one another always impressed me ~ you were so great together & happy, which is a great joy in Life. David, Keep watch over all of us here from your Heavenly vantage point....keep a hand on the tiller to sail into the sunrises & sunsets and sprinkle some rainbows for us to view and know that it is you who sent them. Love you forever my dear friend...until we meet again......
