DAVID WERMAN Obituary

WERMAN--David Sanford. Born January 1, 1922, New York, NY, died June 3, 2014, New York, NY after a courageous three-year fight with cancer. He is survived by his two children Marco Werman and his wife Schuyler Engel; Claudia Werman Connor and her husband Sam Connor; five grandchildren, Corinne, Caleb, Stella, Luca, and Gabriel; and one great-grandchild, Mathis; and his former wife and friend Marjolijn deJager. David graduated from Bayside High School in Queens, NY, and later earned a BA from Queens College in 1943, and an MD from l'Ecole de medicine at the l'Universite de Lausanne in Switzerland. He trained as an obstetrician and gynecologist, practicing in Manhattan at Beth Israel Hospital until 1964 when he began training in psychiatry. He moved to North Carolina in 1967, taking up a position in the department of psychiatry at University of North Carolina, while completing training at the Psychoanalytic Institute in Chapel Hill. He transferred to the Duke University medical school in 1975, where he taught and practiced psychoanalysis until his retirement in 1992. He was respected and admired by colleagues and students. "He was in huge demand as a psychotherapy supervisor throughout his career, because he was such a kind, thoughtful and often hilarious observer of the human condition," said one colleague. He was inducted as Fellow into the American College of Psychoanalysts. In retirement he moved back to his native New York where he made the most the city had to offer. David slowed down, but continued writing about painter James Ensor, and reading voraciously, from Proust to Alan Furst. He knew firsthand Furst's war, having served from 1943-45 in the 376th Flight Squadron's European Air Offensive. David was fluent in French, maintained close ties to his friends from medical school in Switzerland and France who adored him and loved calling him "Dave." He continued to learn late into life, teaching himself German and Italian. David loved music, from chamber ensembles to Billie Holiday. He played clarinet and flute, and was taking piano lessons up until his death. David asked that any gifts of remembrance be given to the American Civil Liberties Union, of which he was a member for many decades. https://www.aclu.org/secure/ make-gift-aclu-someones-memory?s_src=UNH000001 MEM&ms=web_left_nav A private service will be held at a later date.

David delivered my first son at Beth Israel. He was still a resident at the time but the Attending was late for the delivery. He was very popular at the hospital and had a great deal of charm enhanced by his fluency in French. I lost touch with him many years ago but I sincerely sympathize with your loss.

I was touched by Marco's mention of his dad on the radio June 6, partly because my dad died at age 93 a year and a half ago, and because David Werman sounds like a lovely man in Marco's tribute. As it happens, I have been organizing my dad's papers for the last year, and TODAY ran across the Faculty Directory for the UNC School of Medicine, 1975-1976, and found pictures of David S. Werman as well as my father, J. Wilbert Edgerton, in the Department of Psychiatry listings. When we think about our old dads, it's great to remember what long and rich lives they led, and now I when I hear Marco, I will enjoy knowing about the Werman's NC connections, too.

Dear Claudia and Marco, please accept my condolences on the death of your father. Reading about his life and accomplishments was so interesting. He seems to be a man who lived his life fully. My thoughts are with you both.
