DEVON POOR Obituary

POOR--Devon McDermott, died at home surrounded by family in Bronxville, NY on February 24th, two days after her 75th birthday. She was born in New Jersey in 1947 to Alice-Jane and James O. McDermott. She was raised with her twin Debbie in Short Hills, NJ. Devon and Debbie attended Kent Place School in Summit, NJ, and spent summers in Amagansett and East Hampton. Devon went on to Colby-Sawyer College. She married childhood friend, John Poor with whom she had grown up sailing and causing trouble. Devon and John raised their three children in Short Hills, where she was a dedicated and active participant in the community. They later moved to New York City where they spent 13 wonderful years before moving to Bronxville. Devon is survived by her daughter A.J. and husband Sean Murphy, her son Sam and wife Olivia and John, III and his wife Jenna. She was the loving grandmother to seven grandchildren: Jake, Jamie, Ben and Devon Murphy and Amelia, Chip and Gus Poor and another grandson Poor on the way. She is survived also by her sister, Debbie Wight, along with husband Bill Wight of Dorset, VT and their family. Devon was fun, smart, and had a dry and wicked wit. She was an astute bridge player who achieved the title of Life Master a few years back and enjoyed word games and crossword puzzles. She read The New York Times from cover to cover daily, and read more books this past month than most people will in a year. She was one half of a twin duo that was known for their angelic looks and devilish irreverence. She will be greatly missed by many. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Bronxville on Friday, March 4, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Jansen Hospice (jansenhospice.org), who provided her wonderful care in her final days or to NYP Lawrence Hospital's Cancer Center: www.nyp.org

Devon was loved by all the bridge players at the Cosmopolitan Club. She will be greatly missed by all of us.

Devon was my close friend for 52 years, starting when we worked together at Business International Corp. She spoke Spanish fluently and wrote knowledgeably about Latin American politics and business. Most importantly for me, she introduced me to my late husband, with whom I spent 39 wonderful years. She was smart, witty, often hilariously funny and the most competitive person I´ve ever known. On the rare occasions when I beat her at Words With Friends, she would come back with a vengeance and crush me. I could almost feel my iPad vibrating from her determination to win. My sympathies to Debbie, AJ, Sam and John and their families, and to all of those who, like me, have lost a great friend.

My brilliant and funny New York City bridge partner, such times we had together....never forgotten, dearest Devon.

We´re so sad about Devon´s death. She burned bright. She was a favorite of Michael´s bridge partners. Finding their way back from the Rye Brook tournament that time was harder than beating their opponents.
