I worked with Dr. Berger at the Aberdeen single room hotel in mid Manhattan from 1975 until 1980. Here we tended to recently discharged psychiatric patients, providing them a home and a multitude of social services. Dr. Berger was a friend and mentor who loved everyone he worked with. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I loved him as a brother and I was saddened to find out of his passing so many years afterward. My belated condolences go out to Heidi, Mathew and Felicia. We lost a great humanitarian.

I rotated with Dr. Berger for 6 weeks earlier this year. The first thing I noticed about him were his tennis shoes with argyle socks. I think these features explained a lot about the man. He was knowledgable about many things in life, genuinely concerned for humans, and had a great sense of humor. I remember one conversation he had with us involved literature, history, music, shopping in long island, and world travel. He would come and see us some times just to talk about life and it was great.

Dear Heidi and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Dirk was a one-of-a-kind, out-of-the-box thinker, a witty, insightful person. It was an honor to know him and a pleasure to spend time with him.
May your memories comfort, sustain, and cheer you.

Dr Berger will be dearly missed. I loved his quick wit and his enigma smile. He enjoyed chatting about psychology and shared he had a daughter in law in the discipline. He was a mentor to many of our fellow psychiatry residents and his tenure earned him the respect of many colleagues those present and well as those retired. He was appreciated and he showed his respect and admirataion for others. Although his passing means we are missing his physical presence, I believe in our uniqueness as individuals what we bring to world is forever. Ife Ayodele Psy D

On behalf of the Psychology service of Metropolitan Hospital - past and present - we send our deepest condolences to the family of our beloved colleague and friend Dr. Dirk Berger: to his wife Heidi, his son Matthew and daughter Felicia.
A giant was taken from us, too soon.
In addition for caring for hundreds of patients and guiding numerous psychiatrists and psychiatric residents Dr. Berger was always supportive of our psychologists and psychology interns.
All of us who worked with him on a daily basis knew how he was able to integrate humor, popular culture and music with psychiatric knowledge. He brought meaning to our work and his style eased the tension that is part of working on an inpatient psychiatric unit.
We all mourn his passing and we cry with his family.

Dirk was the unit chief on 5W where I worked as a social worker in the early to mid 90s. Dirk was brilliant and funny and had the unique ability to make me (and everyone around him) feel good about themselves and taken care of by him. He was loving and kind with a generous spirit that was a gift to be around every day for the 6 years that I worked at Metropolitan.
Condolences to Heidi, Felicia and Matt. Dirk was very special and his death is a loss.
