DONALD ASHKENASE Obituary

ASHKENASE--Donald. Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) mourns the passing of our dear friend and colleague Don Ashkenase. As a longtime senior executive at NYC Health + Hospitals, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and Montefiore Medical Center, Don was a true icon in New York's hospital finance community. His decades of service were marked by his intelligence, compassion, and deep commitment to improving the health of New Yorkers. He was a beloved leader at GNYHA and Healthfirst, and a mentor to a generation of health care professionals. In addition, Don's commitment to non-profit volunteerism and philanthropy was unmatched. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Karen, his children Jeffrey, Andrew, Debbie and their spouses, and his many friends and colleagues. Kenneth E. Raske, President Lee H. I did not know him or ever meet him but will forever be impacted by his legacy. My daughter has Primary Hyperoxaluria and his determination in the search for a cure and treatment has surely paid off for all of those suffering. Thank you for that &

Don had rare attributes. He was incisive and kind; brilliant and affirming of others; insightful and encouraging. He was at his best when he brought the best out in others. I learned many things from Don. He was a mentor and an inspiration. I've missed his steady presence and enthusiasm on the HealthFirst Board. I will think of him often. My condolences to his family and friends.
