Dorothy Cullman Obituary

CULLMAN--Dorothy. The Trustees and staff of The Museum of Modern Art deeply mourn the loss of our beloved friend Dorothy Cullman. Her generosity, passion, wit, elegance, and style will be missed throughout the Museum, as well as throughout the philanthropic community. Lewis and Dorothy Cullman have been visionary benefactors to the arts, sciences, and education and their generosity is distinguished by a deep personal involvement and encouragement of others to support the causes that they love. The Cullmans' support of MoMA began in 1971 when they joined the Museum's International Council, and Lewis has always credited Dorothy, who was more familiar with modern art at the time, for his involvement in the art world and with MoMA. The Cullmans' generosity to MoMA established The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building, which completed the Museum's expansion and renovation project and crystallized MoMA's dual missions of art and education. Their support has also made possible The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Gallery in the Museum's Philip Johnson Architecture and Design Galleries, and The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Foundation has endowed a number of education programs at the Museum. Dorothy was a member of The International Council, Architecture and Design Committee, Library Council, and Chairman's Council. Dorothy was a television producer and an avid supporter of writers, artists, and human rights efforts. She served on the boards of numerous not-for-profit organizations and was instrumental in bringing many arts and culture programs to public television by supporting Thirteen WNET. She was a great philanthropist, a committed and inspirational leader, and the best and most beloved of friends. We extend our deepest condolences to her husband Lewis and to their family.
