Dorothy Cullman Obituary

CULLMAN--Dorothy. The Trustees and the staff of The New York Public Library deeply mourn the passing of Dorothy Cullman, one of the most dedicated members of the Library family, who, along with her devoted husband Lewis, was one of the nation's leading philanthropists in the arts, culture, and education. She was a tremendously loyal and generous friend of the Library. She served as a Trustee for nearly two decades. Her energetic involvement had a far-reaching effect on the Library and the millions of people it serves. Dorothy and Lewis have helped propel the Library into the 21st century and allowed us to offer our extraordinary collections and services in exciting new facil ties in bold new ways. We are tremendously proud that our Trustees have named some of the Library's most outstanding facilities in Dorothy and Lewis's honor: The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, our unparalleled library on music, theatre, and dance; the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Circulating Library and Reading Room at our the Science, Industry and Business Library, one of the Library's four major research centers; and the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, housing our international fellowship program, created in honor of Brooke Russell Astor. The generosity that Dorothy and Lewis have shared has changed the landscape of New York and will have a lasting impact on our nation's cultural and intellectual life. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lewis, her sons Frederick and Bruce W. Benenson, and all of her family and friends. Catherine C. Marron, Chairman Samuel C. Butler, Elizabeth Rohatyn, Marshall Rose, Chairmen Emeriti Paul LeClerc, President
