Dorothy Cullman Obituary

CULLMAN--Dorothy. The Board and Staff of The New York Botanical Garden are deeply saddened by the loss of our longtime friend Dorothy Cullman, wife of Lewis B. Cullman, Senior Vice Chairman of the Board. As a founding member of the Botanical Science Committee, Dorothy's intellectual and philanthropic interests were very broad and included a wide range of science research efforts at the Garden. Together Dorothy and Lewis founded the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Program for Molecular Systematics, providing our scientists with state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technologies for botanical research. In addition to a trip to the Amazon, we shared many adventures over the decades. Dorothy was well known for her pithy wit, inimitable style, and passionate support of cultural endeavors. She adored The Orchid Show and other aesthetic and artistic aspects of the Garden. In 2004 Dorothy and Lewis received the Founders Award, honoring and acknowledging their concern for the environment and participation in a variety of ways to help improve Earth's delicate balance for all humankind. She was also an ardent advocate and supporter of writers and artists as well as human rights issues, leaving an august legacy of social compassion and inspiring generosity. Dorothy felt and exuded a genuine obligation to give back, and her commitment to organizations and causes she believed in was unwavering. We express our sincere condolences to her beloved husband, Lewis, and their family. Wilson Nolen, Chairman of the Board Gregory Long, President and CEO James Miller, Ph.D., Dean and Vice President for Science The New York Botanical Garden
