EDWARD ROVER Obituary

ROVER--Edward Frank. Edward Frank Rover. October 4, 1938 to July 18, 2023. No amount of space could be adequate to fully honor the breadth and depth of his life. What follows is a mere piece of who he was. Born into a family with few means, he graduated egregia cum laude from Fordham University, attended Harvard Law School and joined the law firm of White & Case, from which he retired in 2004, going on to become the President and Chairman of the Dana Foundation, a private philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing neuroscience and society. Ed served on the Boards of the Guggenheim Museum, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Brearley School, the Charles A. Dana Foundation, the Waterford School, the Cranshaw Corporation, the Markle Foundation, the Rumsey Cartier Foundation, and the Norton Simon Museum, and as a Council Member of the Harvard- Mahoney Neuroscience Institute at Harvard Medical School. He traveled widely, loved broadly and deeply, and was interested in absolutely everything. His mastery of the mundane and the arcane was beyond compare. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Wanda (Charkowski) Rover, and his brother, Frederick Rover, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Maureen (Wyer) Rover; their children, Liz Rover Bailey, Emily R. Grace, and William A. Rover; Liz's husband, Erik J. Bailey, and their children, Cassie and Zoe; Emily's husband, Charles B. Grace, and their children Eloise and Carter; William's children, Aidan and Roxy; his dear friend and mentee, Andrew Weiler; and his devoted caregiver, Dwayne Towler. A service and celebration of his life will be organized in the coming months.

I worked at The Dana Foundation for 22 years, during that time I found Mr Rover to be a wonderful person to work with. He treated everyone with respect, and gave people the opportunity to advance. I had the upmost respect for him, and hope his memories live on through his love ones.

I did not know Mr Rover personally but i do remember him helping the children at the Madison Square Boys with their homework in 1960.He must have been a student at Fordham at the time.He was from the neighborhood and giving back to the less fortunate kids at the club

Theodore A. Rover (Younger brother)

July 25, 2023

As the youngest of the three Rover Boys (born October 6th 1939, a year after Ed´s birth on October 4th (both at home in 334 East 24th Street) there is almost nothing to add to the tributes he will receive from the many whose lives he enriched and loved, certainly none more heartfelt than the enduring love for the big brother whose love was mutually shared for the eight plus decades of his remarkable life including l our last nine days together in his home in December of 2019 and the final four we had together there in July of 2022.

"And soon our best men with thee do go..."

I am heartbroken to hear the news of Ed's passing. He was the consummate gentleman, lawyer and mentor. I extend my deepest condolences to Maureen and family. May his legacy live on in all who love him and may they passage of time diminish the acute pain from Ed's loss and turn the pain into beautiful memories of Ed's life well-lived.
