EDWIN JOHNSON Obituary

JOHNSON--Edwin T., 82, was a Trustee Emeritus of The Jackson Laboratory, an independent nonprofit research institution headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine. He died in his home in Newtown, Penn., on August 23, 2012, after a courageous battle of 22 years with prostate cancer. If you have a 401(k) retirement plan through your employer, it is thanks to Ed Johnson. It was his Pennsylvania-based consulting firm, The Johnson Companies, that devised the savings instrument in the late 1970s, seizing on changes in section 401(k) of the federal tax code. Ed is survived by Cynthia, his beloved wife of 60 years, and his loving children, grandchildren and family. He was involved in many philanthropic causes, including civil rights, education, religion and science. The hallmark of his involvement in all these was inspirational leadership and unselfish devotion to what he believed. He gave much of his time, energy and resources to The Jackson Laboratory including founding The Society for Discovery, its planned giving program. He will be greatly missed and his memory will be honored for his dedication to The Jackson Laboratory for over 15 years. Funeral services to be held at Newtown Presbyterian Church, 25 North Chancellor Street, Newtown, PA 18940 on September 7, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. The Board of Trustees, members of The National Council and management of The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine.

Ed Johnson was many things to many people. To the world he was an champion of those in need, innovator, indefatigable leader and a spark o inspiration to others. To his friends he was honest, cheerful and a welcome booster. To his children he was a strong father, friend and role model. And for his wonderful wife Cindy it is no undersatement to say that he worshipped the ground on which she walked. I am proud to have shared him with the world as a friend and mentor. Leo Holt
