EDWIN McAMIS Obituary

McAMIS--Edwin E. Edwin E. McAmis, age 88, died peacefully at home in Coral Gables, FL on June 3, 2023. Born In Cape Girardeau, MO and raised in Sikeston, MO, Ed graduated from Harvard College, A.B. magna cum laude, in 1956 and Harvard Law School, LL.B., in 1959. After moving to New York, he began a 35-year legal career as a commercial litigator at several firms before becoming a partner at Lovejoy, Wasson, Lundgren & Ashton in 1969. Ed moved to Skadden Arps in 1977 as a partner, where he remained until his retirement in 1993. During his last few years at Skadden, Ed was the special partner in charge of pro bono matters for the firm. Ed was also an adjunct professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University and served on several advisory panels of the New York City Bar Association. He also served on the board of Lambda Legal and the Aston Magna Music Festival. Ed was a generous benefactor to many organizations during his life, notably the Metropolitan Opera, the YES Institute and the ACLU. He loved the visual arts, opera, travel and, most of all reading. He had a wide range of intellectual interests including the history of Christianity, law and legal history and neurobiology. Ed had a vast web of friends and was a mentor to many younger people seeking their paths. Ed is survived by his partner of 25+ years, Gerson Gonzalez, son Bruce McAmis, daughter-in-law Karen, grandchildren Jack, Lily and Vivien, sister Ann, two nieces, and many cousins, friends and loved ones. His judgment, intellect, curiosity and generosity are already missed. In lieu of flowers please consider a gift to the YES Institute and/or the ACLU of Florida.
