I live at atria senior living. I am the youngest one here. I had the good fortune to meet Ellen Oppenheim many times..often over dinner and was so flattered that she took a liking to me. She loved to sing and reminisce about her amazing, productive life. I was in awe of her. She wanted to return to mManhattan and live in her own apt again as she loved nyc culture and the life of the city. She would often come late to dinner like me and we would be scolded together. She said in paris, they don't eat at 430! For some reason, staff called her tea time....probably something to do with her living in England. She spent most of her time reading avidly and due to close quarters told me she put her books under her bed. When she told me she hung out with marlon brando I thought "that's not fair!" . He was my secret teenage crush! She had a great sense of humor...she thought I was pretty which is the biggest compliment I ever got, coming from her! I will miss her dearly and thinking of her during the holidays. Another resident is here with me and is also sad at her passing. She just said live your life to the fullest and take advantage of every minute...ellen sure did.

No wonder Marlon Brando called Ellen
Adler in the middle of the night. He
adored her, and she REMEMBERED. Ellen
knew the founders, actors, writers and
graduates of THE GROUP THEATRE who left
an indelible mark on THE AMERICAN THEATRE.
There was a kindness in her voice which
invited a person into her world. I was
lucky to know her during my married years with AL HIRSCHFELD. She was alone
but never lonely. I urged her to write
an autobiography...those rehearsals of
THE GROUP, her time in PARIS when the
sounds of music changed...her life during and afer STELLA, and the HAROLD
influence.
We could talk about Erwin Piscator,
Sidney Lumet, and Seymour Barab...
Her stories were not in the history books...but real life experiences.
How proud she was that son Tom continued the theatrical tradition by
running the STELLA ADLER STUDIO.
A fantastic link to the ADLER LEGACY
which includes the vibrant Yiddish
Theatre.
Thank you Sara for helping Ellen get
through the last years.
With great affection,
Louise Kerz Hirschfeld
