ELLEN HAUPTMAN Obituary

HAUPTMAN--Ellen M., of Manhattan and St. James, New York, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 7, 2024. Born in Brooklyn on March 5, 1942, she attended Packer Collegiate Institute and earned a B.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art & Architecture at Temple University, where she was a painter - a passion to which she returned later in life. In Philadelphia, Ellen met and then married the love of her life, Martin Hauptman, her partner in every way for more than sixty years. Ellen had immeasurable energy and a remarkable zest for life. She loved New York City - and never missed an opportunity for another theater experience, a new film, a well-reviewed restaurant, an afternoon stroll. She had her own unique style, never hesitated to compliment a "zippy" outfit, or offer ideas on how to make it just that! She traveled the world with Martin, from Italy, France, and Australia, to Myanmar, Cambodia and Machu Picchu, always with an eye on the next adventure. Mostly though, Ellen had unbounding love - expressed through creative and abundant meals and gifts and notes and advice and questions - that touched everyone she came near. She demonstrated limitless devotion to her husband Martin, three children, Jodi, Matthew, and Andrew, six grandchildren, Ben, Lila, Julia, Zack, Arron and Kyle, daughters-in-law, Ellen Bronfman and Dao Jun Hauptman, and son-in-law Gregory Clarick. With an unmatched combination of gusto and warmth, she embraced and impacted her friends of many decades; those new friends she constantly made (every encounter led to a meaningful personal relationship with infinite and ongoing sustenance); students whom she guided in the college application process who turned to her for years after; and the children of her friends and the friends of her children - all of whom adored her and, without asking, received so much. We will miss her enthusiasm, her energy, her passion, her volume, and her ever-powerful encouragement and support, and celebrate her life every day. Service to take place at Central Synagogue, 652 Lexington Avenue, Wednesday, January 10, 2024, 11am.

We were pleased that the service captured nicely what made Ellen so special. She was a force. Her children and grandchildren´s word showed that the energy she put into family paid large dividends and was lovingly appreciated. We will miss her.
