NATHANSON--Ellen. Died Friday morning after a long illness. Lifelong resident of NYC. She attended James Madison High School in Midwood, where she met her devoted husband of 55 years, Carl. They both graduated from Brooklyn College. A schoolteacher, an advocate for children, women and civil rights, she was also a longtime champion to improve the conditions of NYC public schools. She later held the position of VP at Dime Savings Bank in their Community Affairs Department. When she retired from banking, she turned to her childhood passion of painting and was determined to begin a new career as an artist rep, selling emerging artists' works on the East End of Long Island. She continued as an art consultant for several years, until declining health made such work impossible. In addition to Carl, Ellen is survived by her three loving children, Michael, Caryn and Steven, their spouses, Tracy, Jeff and Debbie, and seven grandchildren, whom she adored. Service 12:30pm Monday at Temple Emanu-el at Fifth Ave and 65th Street. Burial will be private. She will be greatly missed.
