EUGENE KENNEDY Obituary

KENNEDY--Eugene Cullen,

Ph.D, age 86. Dr. Kennedy was a theologian, psychologist, best-selling author, and syndicated columnist. He was widely recognized as a keen observer of the human condition. Born in 1928 in Syracuse, NY, Dr. Kennedy received his A.B. Dr. Kennedy will be best remembered as a voice for the Catholic community; his unique blend of psychology, theology, and compassionate humanism guided his work. He also served on the Board of Directors for the King Kullen Grocery Co., a family-owned business founded in 1930 in Long Island, NY. Dr. Kennedy was actively involved in the business until his death. Dr. Kennedy was the loving and devoted husband of Dr. Sara Kennedy, nee Charles, with whom he collaborated on many projects. My mom worked for the Kennedy's for many years. I spent many Saturday mornings, helping her in their home, especially when they were out of town. I was always in awe of the large book collection they had. I will be forever grateful to the Kennedy's for being so wonderful to my mom, especially when she fell ill. My deepest condolences.

Dear Gene: You were my psychology professsor at Maryknoll College, Glen Ellyn, IL in 1968 as I contemplated becoming a Maryknoll priest missioner. While doing a Maryknoll Missioner internship in Tanzania 1974-76, I believe the Holy Spirit whispered in my ear that I would make a terrible life-long celibate. So, I exited Maryknoll and pursued a corporate career made successful by my education, training and formation as a Maryknoll Missioner. You and I ran into each other in downtown Chicago several years ago, but I couldn't keep up with you. I regret I was not able to attend your funeral services last Wednesday, June 10, to honor our Maryknoll years together. God's speed to you, Gene, and see you on the other side where we'll be able to exchange ideas again. May you rest in peace. And my heartfelt condolences to your family, especially Sara, your loving spouse. Albert Waszok
