I met the wonderful Eve when she was living in Naxos 45 years ago, when I was just five. I loved her and Ralph her husband at once. I have never known anyone else so unmarked by the passing of time. I sat in a London black cab talking to her on the phone on her hundredth birthday, as lucid and funny as ever. I will always remember Eve, a dear friend.

Eve was my father, Gary Salzman's, younger cousin (by a few months). He thought of her as another sister, and Eve & Gary shared loving memories and fondness for one another all of their lives. May you rest in Peace, Eve.
Eve sent a lovely email when I hosted a 100th Anniversary of my late Dad's Birthday in 2013. This was from my sister, Cindy Amar, & I in wishing Eve a Happy 100th Birthday:
"HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, EVE BATES, born on June 4, 1913! OK, Eve is not actually on facebook, so even my shout out in all caps will not get to her. But she does send and receive email. Eve is my father's younger cousin, born 3 months after him and today really is her 100th birthday. I sent her a unicorn piñata, because celebrating your 100th birthday makes you almost as rare as a unicorn. I filled it with candies, some liquor miniatures, some daily decision making dice ("Snack Now" "Complain Often") and a beautiful gold scarf. The Swedish birthday song says, 'May you live for 100 years!' so I told Eve that we will change the words to say, 'May you live for 100 more years!' (Må du leva i hundra år till). Eve was married to the late novelist, Ralph Bates. I love my family."
