Fernando MACIAN-JUAN Obituary

MACIAN-JUAN--Fernando It is with tremendous sadness that we mourn the loss of Fernando Macian-Juan, M.D., Ph.D., our professor of pathology and member of our Institute for Aging Research and of the Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center, who valiantly battled a long illness. He was 56. Also associate director of our Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), Fernando was a much-beloved mentor and colleague, known for his warmth, collegiality, and commitment to training future physician-scientists and researchers. In 2008, our Ph.D. students selected him to receive the LaDonne H. Schulman Excellence in Teaching Award, given at commencement. He also was elected to our Leo M. Davidoff Society recognizing excellence in teaching medical students. He and his lab team sought to understand immune dysfunction that occurs with aging, particularly in cancer, toward identifying new drug therapies. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife and our and his dear colleague, Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo. Fernando will be missed but his quiet influence will live on through those he has touched and trained. Gordon F. Tomaselli, M.D. The Marilyn and Stanley M. Conocí a Fernando y Ana María poco después de mudarme a City Island hace décadas.

¡Amigosiempre! https://cimages.me/content/RIP-FERNANDO-MACIAN

There are no words to describe who Fernando was and how he will be remembered. When I joined the Macian-Cuervo family as a postdoc, Fernando gave me the opportunity to meet Ana, and together make me part of their legacy in autophagy and the immune system. Fernando was an incredible mentor, funny, brilliant and always generous with everything and everyone. He transmitted to me all his passion for the molecular immunology, he taught me how to study it and he gave me the knowledge and tools to be constant, stay calm and above all, smile, being positive and practical in the most frustrating moments of science. He taught me practically everything that I am today as a scientist and how to run my laboratory and train students. After several years I look back, and a large part of my professional position and practically everything I have achieved in it, I can say that I owe it to him. I can not only remember him as my mentor, but also as a father during my postdoc life. In a stage that is not easy for a young researcher far from home, Fernando always helped me solve many problems of life outside the laboratory and most importantly, he made me feel like a daughter. Over the years, he gave me the opportunity to keep in touch miles away, as a great colleague and friend, and he unconditionally helped me in my projects and my scientific career. He was an exceptional human being, always supporting and caring for everyone unconditionally.
His generosity in the distance miles from New York, his way of simplifying problems, his positivity with a smile, his conversations both scientific and routine life, his support, his great advice always with enthusiasm, his calm and temperance, his courage, strength and the beautiful true love that he always transmitted for Ana, worthy of admiration, will never be forgotten by me.
I know he will always be taking care of all those who will miss him and appreciate him. But most of all, I know that he will be resting in peace somewhere nice, smiling and taking care of the love of his life, Ana, as he always did and always will.
Fernando, you will be missed and will always be remembered.
