May we continue to find peace and inspiration from the Radiance where Frank dwells. He is still holding his poets lamp.

Frank was and is a real inspiration to me. I picked up his book "Angel" from a discount table in Philadelphia book store in 1981. It changed the way I thought about words and writing. Most of all, Frank's poetry was entertaining: deep, fun and funny. Rest in peace, Frank. My prayers, love and gratitude to his family.

I'm so incredibly grateful that I was able to help bring Frank to Woodland Pattern and the Milwaukee Public Library back in 2011 to read his poetry and to speak about his vocations as both chef and poet. How warm his and Helen's company that weekend, how luminous his poems and the stories he told us, how delicious his chicken cacciatore. Both my husband Roberto and I have read Frank's Selected Poems over and over again; it's one of those books we'll always go back to. We know how fortunate we are to have encountered his vision. We are only sorry we didn't get to see him again, but we did raise a glass to him this past Día de los muertos. Our condolences to Helen and the rest of Frank's family.

Frank Lima was a very great man with an amazing American story. He leaped from enormous difficulties into an empyrean of constantly evolving poetics. In the last few years of his life, he would call me with a new poem a day. He astonished me with the growth of his art. His poems are realistic prayers. While he was filled with satire, shocking and precise, his main stories were about his love for his children, his wife, his students, and the curious changes of the body itself. We started up our friendship in 1962, and it never died. How lucky I was to have known him. Like a boxer who understood the absolute demands of the ring, and he was funny, humorous as a king.

Our mutual friend Phil Bryant brought Frank and Helen to Minnesota, and five minutes after entering our house, Frank opened a bag where he had stashed some demi-glace and started preparing a heavenly carbonnade. We talked well into the night, and he gave me about a week's worth of education in cooking and poetry in two days. He was also very generous with his advice about my writing, and I was a thorough admirer of the energy and gutsiness of his work. Thank you, Frank, for improving our world with your words and works, and thank you, Helen, for giving him so much of your life. And thank you, Phil, for being our go-between. I know how much his friendship has meant to you. I have missed him, and now I will miss him grievously.

I was moved many times by Frank Lima's poetry. I regret very much that I missed meeting him. "We go through ourselves / and having stopped point out the urn and the doves / engraved in the chosen air." - Jose Lezama Lima. With condolences to loved ones, Andrew
