FREDRICK JAFFE Obituary

JAFFE--Fredrick, M.D. The members of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Department of Orthopaedic Surgery mourn the untimely passing of our valued friend and colleague, Dr. Fredrick F. Jaffe. Dr. Jaffe was an honored member of our department for 44 years, as a resident, faculty member, and Director of the Division of Adult Reconstructive Surgery. He was an outstanding clinician, gifted surgeon and dedicated educator. Thousands of patients have benefited from the hip and knee replacement surgery he performed, restoring productive and pain free lives. He contributed to the education of scores of orthopaedic residents, who now practice the principles he taught. He leaves a saddened hospital community with a profound void. His many years of dedicated work at the Hospital for Joint Diseases touched the lives of an infinite number of people. We grieve his passing as we celebrate his exemplary life and extend our heart-felt sympathy to his wife, Dr. Deborah Moody; his sons, David and Harry; his daughters-in-law, Leslie and Andrea and his grandchildren Zachary, Aria and Lila. Joseph D. Zuckerman M.D., Chair William L. Jaffe, M.D. Joseph A. Bosco, M.D. Kenneth A Egol, Vice Chairs, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, NYU Langone Medical Center

I am retired now and live in Florida. I walk many miles almost daily on the beaches with my metal detector searching for treasures hidden in the sand and surf. This would have been impossible for me if it wasn't for the skills of Doctor Jaffe. I had a knee replacement that was done on Long Island by a doctor that treated me in the past. My Knee replacement was not correct in many ways, and I spent 11 days in the hospital. A year later Doctor Jaffe removed it and replaced it with great care and skill. I was in the hospital 4 days and had hardly any pain. The following year he did my other knee and for the first time in decades I was free of knee pain. I have cried for only 4 people who have passed away, my son, 2 best friends, and Doctor Jaffe. He made the knee pain go away and my knee pain started when I slid into third base when I was 10 years old. I think of Dr Jaffe every day and he is never forgotten in my household.

Dr. Jaffe replaced my right hip in 2002 (he was still at Doctors' Hospital then and Dr. Moody was my anesthesiologist). He replaced my left hip in 2006, and the revision to the left hip in 2012. He was brilliant and committed and I can't imagine my life without his skilled support. He enabled my independence and comfort. I am learning of his death very late but I mourn with his family and friends.

When I first consulted Dr. Jaffe I knew I had found the surgeon I could entrust with my complex hip surgery. Delaying the surgery I was not fortunate enough to experience his amazing skill. I did however, meet with Dr. Jaffe as his patient a few times in as many years. He was always extremely patient with my concerns and his calm, caring way comforted and reassured.

When I called to move to the next step and learned of his passing I was shocked and deeply saddened.

Deepest condolences to his wife and family whom I hope are comforted in knowing how much he was loved, trusted and respected by all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Dr. Jaffe you are sorely missed!

To Dr. Debra Moody,
I was saddened to learn of Dr. Jaffe's passing. I became his patient when he was still a resident working under Dr. Mark Lazansky at the old hospital up town. Dr. Jaffe got me through two hips and two knees. I will miss him.

He performed bilateral hip replacements for my Mother.
We are very sad to just find this information.
May he RIP and he will never be forgotten. Thank you

Dr. Leslie J. Rivkind

March 31, 2015

My name is Dr. Leslie Rivkind, and I owe my life to Dr. Fred Jaffe, who was my orthopaedic surgeon and to whom I was "a friend in need". Having just learned today of his death (upon referring a beloved cousin to him for possible knee surgery), I hope it is not too late to extend my sympathy to Dr. Moody, Harry, David and their families. His death must surely be a great loss to each of you, as it is even to me. I will dearly miss both him and the knowledge that he would be there if I needed his professional care again. Let me explain:
Having had what Dr. Jaffe mid-career ranked "among the top three most serious cases" of JRA he had ever seen, I met him in 1978 on the advice of Dr. Joseph Milgram, my childhood orthopedist, to explore the possibility of surgery to get rid of the crutches I had been using since childhood. I was a 36-year-old young woman working on my Ph. D. in Psychology. Together we planned 1979 to be a banner year for both of us, especially me: bilateral hip & knee total joint replacements to enable me to discard the axilary crutches I had had to use to walk "before Fred" for nearly 30 years!!! My life can fairly be divided into "before and after Fred".
I will never forget Fred for his affection, skill, kindness, our far-ranging conversations and the fun we had while he guided me through the process of the surgeries and relearning to walk after each one until finally, finally I at last reached the apogee of my new-found ability to walk the streets of NYC and anywhere with the mere spiffy little black ebony cane I still use now!
Knowing how great my own loss is, how much I will miss him, do already, I can only hope these words comfort you, his family, whose loss is so much deeper.
Sincerely, Leslie

February 17, 2015

I just recommended Dr. Jaffe to a friend and learned of his passing. I am crying over his loss. He was one of a kind; a true healer and a mensch. When I had a botched hip replacement fifteen years ago by a top surgeon, (who would not even see me to follow up), every doctor I contacted told me to "go back to your doctor" despite the fact that I told them I wanted nothing more to do with that doctor. Dr. Jaffee, alone, had the courage to see me. I was hooked from that moment on. He was able to help me, and when I needed my other hip replaced, he performed the surgery. What can you say of him except that he was what a doctor is supposed to be - commited to healing. He listened; he really listened. And he was brilliant and compassionate and I am so very saddened that we lost him too soon. My deepest condolences to his wife and his family, who I hope can take some comfort in knowing how many many people loved and trusted and respected him.

My name is Susan Hendel Andres. I benefitted from a total hip replacement performed by Dr. Jaffe four years ago. I just today learned of his death. I am saddened since I frelt that he was much more than my Doctor. We discussed politics, and I was always warmly received. He carefully listened to my symptomology and was thorough in assessing my complaints. I will miss him as a Dr. and as a person.

My name is Marie Hanna and I have been a patient of Dr. Jaffe's for more than 20 years. It is certainly heartwarming to read all of the wonderful things that people have said about this "Gentle Giant" of a man. He replaced both of my knees and was about to do a revision on my right knee when he became ill. I will miss him for his very low keyed manner, his gentle touch and kindness. My condolence to his family. He will be missed.

My family has had the privilege and benfit of knowing Dr. Jaffe since the mid 80s. He has restored the quality of life to our family through 7 hips and 2 knees over 30 years with the first being a revision for my father in 1984 and the most recent being my second hip and my 85 year old mom's second knee both done on the same day - 12/5/13. What can you say to the man who literally gave us our live's back? "Thank you" seems so miniscule but at least my mom and I had the opportunity to say that to him one last time this past January when we saw him for our 6 week post op visit. My deceased 5' 2" tall machinist father always referred to Dr. Jaffe as the "gentelest giant with the softest skilled hands" that he had ever met. Dr. Jaffe was gentle, a giant in the medical community and he left an incredible legacy with the people he taught and those whose lives were transformed through the skill of that incredible mind and soft hands. May you rest in peace Dr. Jaffe. To his wife Deborah and all the members of his family, we express our deepest condolences on your loss.

I was extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Jaffe. He returned the quality of life back to me by replacing both of my hips (six months apart) in 2006 and 2007. I will always remember him as a gentle and quiet man, and an extremely skilled doctor and surgeon who I owe my life to. My sincerest condolences to his family, staff, colleagues and fellow patients whose lives this man touched. His caring spirit will always be remembered.

What can you say of a man who has saved you? Dr. Jaffe gave me back my life -- twice. At 50, he replaced my right hip January 11, 2005, and my left hip on November 7, 2013. I told him I loved him when he visited me the next day. I last saw him in January for my 3-month follow up visit. I heard of his passing last week at my 6-month visit. I know how lucky I am to have benefitted from his care one last time. I will never forget the man who put me back in the game -- twice. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Jaffe Family, and all his associates at NYU Langone Medical Center.

My deepest, heartfelt sympathy to Dr. Jaffe's family and friends. I was shocked to hear of his illness and passing since i had seen him just last September. i was 26 years old when i had my first hip replacement - I'm 57 now and it is still holding strong. At each appointment over the years, Dr. Jaffe and i would laugh at what great work he did. He truly changed my life. Another hip and most recently, my left knee - he took great care of me. From drawing blood when the techs couldn't, to allowing me to sing to him when anesthesia wore off and i woke during surgery; more than 30 years of knowing i could trust and count on him. He gave me a new life and i will never, ever forget him.

We are sad to hear of Dr Jaffe's death. He was a fine doctor and a mench. He operated on my wife when she was immobilized by severe hip pain at the age of 40 (1980). He made the time to talk to my children and ease their concerns. In 1990 he replaced my hip. This year he revised my wife's hip. Our health and lives have benefited by knowing him.
