FRIEDA WELLS Obituary

WELLS--Frieda. 1930-2021. Born in Vienna, Frieda immigrated with her family as refugees in 1939. They settled on Tompkins Square Park, New York City, where her father Hillel Weiss was the Rabbi of Yeshiva RJJ. After graduating from Brooklyn College she worked as a lab tech. From 1957 until his death in 2009, she was married to Leon Weliczker Wells, a survivor. They raised their family in northern New Jersey. A small business entrepreneur in the 70s and 80s, Frieda established Pennywatchers in Closter. Later as a Director at the Southeast Senior Center in Englewood, she ran educational and recreational programs. She was an independent thinker with a sense of humor, a love of people, a passion for opera, and a feisty spirit who knew who she was. Frieda especially valued her family, many longtime friends and her brother's family in Israel. She is survived by her children Beth, Alan, and Julian, their spouses, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom adore her and will miss her greatly.

Frieda and Leon - helped make Closter a beautiful town . My many conversations with them were very helpful . May their memory be a blessing .

My deep condolences to Frieda's family. I didn't know Frieda while growing up, but I got to know her over the last decade, or so, when visiting my mom in NY, and ALWAYS arranging a get-together with her NJ friends, Frieda, Sherley, Lucille, and Grace. Frieda always seemed so young (in contrast, perhaps), and was always so vibrant, engaging, interested, and interesting. I'm glad I got to know her a little, and I know she'll be tremendously missed. Best thoughts to the family.
