Dear Bobbie, thank you for letting me know of the passing of Galway. What a remarkable person. Many years ago in San Jose, he was the first person to encourage my poetry. And he read with me at Books Inc. in 1990, he well-known reading with an unknown poet. Kind to the core and it shows, of course, in his memorable poetry. My last memory of Galway is a reading he gave in San Jose (1990's or early 2000's)...he recited from heart John Keats's "Ode To A Nightingale" in his resonate voice. The audience was many as he had a loyal, devoted following out west here in California. May his spirit keep you company on Life's journey. My sincere condolences, Carolyn Grassi, Pacifica, CA
I have all his books and read several poems last night.

Galway Kinnell was very gifted; and fortunately, he was publicly recognized for his insightful words. May the memories of his presence and the joy he added to our lives prove to be a source of comfort to those he leaves behind. May the words at John 11:11-14 enlighten you to the endless possibilities of life with Galway during future times that have been promised. My condolences for your loss!

In line with truth we all come full circle in life filled with uncertainty. Ability, accomplishment, experience, all fade into the back ground as life longs for a way out. As we grow older none can escape the coming of our time. We can rejoice in the memories, they fill us with thoughts of good and bad times. They also help us cope with loss. My most sincere condolence.

I studied with Galway for several years at New York University. He was a teacher and mentor to me and contributed to the person I am today. I am very saddened by his passing, but we will always have the poems and humanity he left behind. My condolences to his family. He was greatly loved by the poetry community.

Please have my condolences. Our days ebb away because of your fury; And our years come to an end like a whisper. The span of our life is 70 years or 80 if one is especially strong. But they are filled with trouble and sorrow; They quickly pass by, and away we fly. (Psalms 90:9,10)

He was just a wonderful, wonderful poet. He knew more about the life of the spirit than a great many of the devoutly religious. His poem "To Christ our Lord" says everything about the paradox of what it really means to be a Christian, but most Christians are so challenged by what he's written there that they run away from it.
Remarkable poet, remarkable man. Condolences to the family. He will be much missed.

Ms Bristol, By some strange coincidence, I sent Galway a picture from Alfred University about a week ago. He was my English professor at Alfred and one of the best professors I have ever had. he came to Alfred with a new masters degree, only about five years older than his students, and enchanted us all. The photo I sent was taken on the tennis court. I thought he would enjoy the memory since he was very happy at Alfred and always spoke of his tenure there as one of the best teaching experiences of his life. The fact that I have fond memories of him after 63 years is a testament to his influence on at least this one former English major. Im truly sorry for our loss.

Dear Bobbie,
I am deeply saddened by this tremendous loss to you, to Mr. Kinnell's family, and, indeed, to American letters. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
I regret that I lost touch with you both as work and family obligations left me with less and less time for scholarly writing. For some reason--a premonition, perhaps?--about a month ago I attempted to get in touch with you to see how Galway was faring, but I was unable to find contact information. I was not aware that he had been ill.
When I consider the highlights of my thirty-year career, Galway Kinnell features prominently: I first met him at Newberry College when I was still a graduate student writing a thesis on his work. In San Francisco in 1991, I had the privilege of introducing him before his reading to an enormous crowd at MLA. When I saw him in 1992 at a conference in Knoxville, I was pregnant with my first child, and though my husband and I had told no one, somehow Galway knew! In 2000, he graciously agreed to come here to Columbia College to read his work and meet with students. No one has ever given a better reading than Galway Kinnell. It has been my privilege and pleasure to study his work and to play a small role in illuminating it for others.
All my best,
