GEORGE LAZARUS Obituary

LAZARUS--George M. The NewYork-Presbyterian community is profoundly saddened by the loss of Dr. George M. Lazarus, our dear friend and the cherished husband of our beloved Board Vice-Chair, Shelly Lazarus. Dr. Lazarus was an extraordinary pediatrician who made a lasting impact on pediatric medicine and on countless children and families who benefited from his dedication and compassion. Dr. Lazarus received his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his internship, residency, and chief residency in pediatrics at Babies Hospital (now NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital). A devoted primary care pediatrician, he was a champion for his patients, and he was one of the first clinicians to hold faculty appointments at both of NewYork-Presbyterian's affiliated medical schools, Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Lazarus was also a truly remarkable teacher who found joy in teaching newborn medicine to future pediatricians. He took care to remember each student by name and encouraged them to maintain a curiosity and hunger for learning throughout their training. He engaged learners with his wealth of knowledge and storytelling, and the Dr. George M. Lazarus Newborn Nurseries at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital are named in his honor. Dr. Lazarus will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and commitment to the field of pediatrics. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Shelly, and their family. Steven J. Corwin, M.D. President and Chief Executive Officer, NewYork-Presbyterian Jordan Orange, M.D., Ph.D. Pediatrician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital Chair of Pediatrics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Sallie Permar, M.D., Ph.D. Pediatrician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine

I will always treasure the memories of your wisdom, friendship, and devotion to always helping others. You are a special soul; whom I will continue think of often in the future as I have in the past for guidance from your Heavenly spirit.

I knew George for 50 years and worked side-by-side with him. Over the decades I contually marveled at his intelligence, constant high energy and numerous humanitarian endeavors. He became a major force for progress, growth and energy at Columbia-Presbyterian and then nationally. He was devoted to his wonderful wife Shelley and his accomplished children and grandchildren. Always a loyal and proud member of the Yale alumni; Columbia; and many important scientific and humanitarian organizations. My wife Arleen and I shall deeply miss his friendship, warm smile and humor and pervasive and penetrating intelligence. Michael H Cohen, MD
