GEORGIA GOSNELL Obituary

GOSNELL--Georgia P.

Georgia Potter Gosnell, died on December 17th, 2014 at her home in Rochester, New York. She was eighty-four. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Hale Gosnell, and her son, Thomas Craig Gosnell. She is survived by Robin Gosnell Travers, Arthur Andrews Gosnell and his wife Page, Elizabeth Gosnell Miller and her husband Richard, and Silvia Gosnell, as well as eleven "wonderful" grandchildren. A graduate of Vassar College, Mrs. Gosnell lived for fifty-seven years "with Lake Ontario in front of her and the Big Woods behind her." She organized Rochester's first Earth Day, called "Now Not Tomorrow" in 1970. In 2006, she and her husband donated ninety-six wooded acres to the Trust for Public Land as a forever wild preserve. In 1978, she was named to the Board of the George Eastman House and spearheaded its restoration. The Eastman House named her Honorary Curator for her efforts. In recent years, she has generously supported the Golisano Children's Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center, the Al Sigl Community of Agencies and the Nantucket Historical Association. In 2014, she was named Rochester's Philanthropist of the Year. Although she spent time in Rochester, and on Nantucket and John's Island, Mrs. Gosnell loved to sail the world with her husband on their beloved ketch, Timoneer. They traveled from Labrador to Fiji to the Outer Hebrides through the Mediterranean and around Cape Horn. She belonged to many clubs, including the Genesee Valley Club, the Country Club of Rochester, the Chatterbox Club, the New York Yacht Club and the Nantucket Yacht Club. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 22nd at 11:00am at Third Presbyterian Church, located at 4 Meigs Street in Rochester. In lieu of flowers, please send any contributions to the George Eastman House, 900 East Avenue, Rochester, New York 14607. Though I never meet you parents, I will always be grateful for the treasure they left the citizens of Webster. The "Big Woods" is a glorious place to get back to nature. So very sorry for you loss.

so sorry to read this obit. Georgia was a great lady (and her husband was a great man). I shared their love of Eastman House even from Florida. May her memory be ever for a blessing. Ron Kwasman
