GERALD RUSSELLO Obituary

RUSSELLO--Gerald J., died November 7, 2021 after a year long illness. Born in 1971 and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Gerald grew up playing kick- the-can and climbing on rooftops, but his keen intellect carried him to Manhattan's Regis High School, then Georgetown, where he was a classics major, and ultimately to law school at New York University. He was a lover of books, principles and theology. He was married to Alexandra (Hines) Russello for 23 years; they had three children, Emma, Georgia and William, and eventually moved from Brooklyn to Pelham, NY. Gerald was a partner at New York City law firm Sidley Austin, but he remained a man of letters and gifted author, having written or edited five books as well as countless articles. He served as the editor of The University Bookman, an online journal reviewing books on politics and culture. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, friends and Catholic faith, his kindness, and a laugh that was the definition of delightful. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his mother, Anne Russello, and sister, Susan (Russello) Buonocore, and countless cousins from a large and loving Sicilian- American family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Regis High School.

I´m so terribly sorry. I just heard tonight. We met sometime before we were 6 years old. We were only a few weeks apart in age.
I remember that we walked together to the first day of first grade at Mary Queen of Heaven School.
We would walk to school together just about everyday right up through 8th grade. We played little league together(both always made the all star team), wiffle ball, stick ball, football, went on cub scout trips and camping trips. I was there for every game of kick the can and manhunt.
I have vivid memories of swimming in the pool on east 55th street in your back yard and cooling off with ice tray toothpick popsicles made from OJ, iced tea or fruit.
punch. We were close right up until my family moved from Brooklyn to New Jersey, sometime in 84/85 , so long ago. We were distanced and although we hadn´t been in touch for quite some time, you had an impact on me and my life that will always be with me. I will always remember your curiosity and brightness and our friendship
My sincerest and deepest condolences to Anne and Susan and to Jerry´s wife and children.

Gerald and I were both partners at Sidley (I was in LA) before my retirement several years ago. I met him shortly after he joined the firm and was delighted to learn he was a fellow Regis alum. Although we never worked together, it is gratifying now to read how truly he was a "man for others." Receive his soul O holy ones; present him now to God Most High.

This is a terrible loss. I am stunned. Condolences to Gerald's family In addition to being a fine lawyer, he was a scholar and an old style public Catholic layman who took both religion and philosophy seriously. Glad to have known him at the SEC and during his brief period of membership at the University Club of New York. If someone would tell me what awful thing carried Gerald away at age 50, I would like to contribute to some fund dedicated to research in that area. Ave Atque Vale.
