GERRIT LANSING

LANSING--Gerrit Livingston, of Greenwich, CT and Northeast Harbor, ME died peacefully on Tuesday, July 27th at the age of 68 at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Born in New York City on May 12th, 1942, he leaves his wife of 40 years, Suydam (Sydie); sons Gerrit Jr. and Sims; daughter in law Patricia; three grandchildren: Carolina, Gerrit III and Magnus; and his brothers David and Evan. Mr. Lansing was raised in New York City. He attended the Allen-Stevenson School, the Lawrenceville School, Columbia University and New York University for undergraduate studies, as well as New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, where he received his Doctorate in Art History. A lifelong patron of the arts and extensive art collector, he was an expert in American Surrealism; an author of numerous papers; a teacher of art history; the curator of many exhibitions, including "Surrealism USA: Between 1930 and 1950" at the National Academy of Design. He was current Chairman of the Board of Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York City for 30 years; President of the Alumni Association of the Institute of Fine Arts in New York City; President of the Pot and Kettle Club on Mount Desert Island, Maine; as well as actively involved for over 40 years on varied committees at the Museum of Modern Art, including the International Council. He spent his summers in Northeast Harbor, ME where he thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid tennis and golf player. An intellectual, lifelong philanthropist, athlete and art collector, he was a deeply beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, colleague and friend to all.
