GIL SHIVA

SHIVA--Gil. The Board of Trustees, staff, and artists of The Public Theater mourn the loss of Gil Shiva, steward of the Susan Stein Shiva Foundation, beloved former trustee of The Public, and a lifelong champion for access to art for all. The Public was proud to honor Gil and his family in June and have the opportunity to thank him for the innumerable ways in which he and his family have made The Public what it is today. Gil's beloved wife Susan Stein Shiva, served as a board member for 15 years until her death in 1983, and together they supported and brought attention to The Public and its mission. Through his work as a philanthropist and as a producer, Gil launched the careers of hundreds of new and rising artists. He served on The Public's board (1990 to 2009) and then honorary council (2010 to 2022). Throughout his life Gil demonstrated through his actions what it meant to lead a good life. His generosity, love for bringing together people of all walks of life, and his commitment to his family and Susan's legacy will be remembered forever. We offer our deepest sympathies to Gil's family including Public Theater Board Member Alexandra Shiva and her husband Jonathan Marc Sherman, his son Andrew, his grandchildren and to all Gil's family and friends.
