GLADYS SHERAK

SHERAK--Gladys,

died peacefully surrounded by family on January 8, 2018 after a long, energetic, and fulfilling life. Gladys was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn on April 5, 1925. She was married for 62 years to Bernard Sherak who preceded her in May 2010. Gladys and Bud spent many happy years together as longtime residents of Larchmont, New York and also enjoyed time in the Berkshire Mountains with their children and grandchildren. Gladys is survived by her sister Ruth, and her son Donald and daughter Nina. A third child, daughter Lucy, died in 1998. Gladys is also survived by two sons-in-law, Todd and Ken, and six grandchildren, Greg, Gina, Matthew, Raffi, Rachael, and Ben. As an enthusiastic lifelong naturalist, Gladys was always eager to share her passion and knowledge of nature and all its wonders with everyone she knew. For many years she worked as a nature guide and educator at local Audubon and other nature centers. Gladys enjoyed a wide range of music and was a dedicated recorder player in several early music ensembles. She was past her 90th birthday at her last recorder performance. Gladys was a vibrant, friendly, inquisitive, feisty, and unconventional woman who embodied tremendous spirit. Among her many other loves were poetry, puns, spirituality, travel, literature, dance, exploration of other cultures, and bananas. A Memorial service will be held 1pm February 17th at the Greenwich Audubon Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Resource Defense Council or Breast Cancer Action.
