GUY HECKMAN Obituary

HECKMAN--Guy Carroll, of Newport, RI and Hobe Sound, FL died Sunday, June 3 at his home on Jupiter Island after a lengthy illness. He was 61. Mr. Heckman had a long career in finance, with a focus on energy, mining, and metals. He began his career at Chase Manhattan bank in 1974 in the Credit Audit Group. He went on to Mercantile Bank in St Louis and later returned to Chase Manhattan where he was a Vice President in the Petroleum and Mining Divisions. Mr. Heckman then joined American Bailey, a private equity venture capital firm, as a Principal, where he focused on the coal sector. Mr. Heckman, an avid sailor, was widely recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to the sport. He was the recipient of the inaugural Ted Turner Trophy awarded for an individual contribution to the 12 Meter Class of sailing on and off the water. Mr. Heckman was lauded for his efforts to sustain the 12 Meter Class, best known as the yachts in the America's Cup Races from 1958-1987. Initially a member of the syndicate for the 12 Meter yacht, "Courageous", which was a two time American's Cup winner, Mr. Heckman went on to be a member of the syndicate for the "USA", eventually taking over sole ownership of the "USA", a Grand Prix class 12 Meter design. He successfully campaigned the "USA", also known as "61", for the past several years. He was known as a sportsman dedicated to the highest level of the spirit of Corinthian, or non-professional, sailing. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club and served on the board of the International Yacht Restoration School and Museum of Yachting. Mr. Heckman attended St Louis Country Day School. He graduated from St. George's School in Newport, RI and Trinity College in Hartford, CT. He is survived by his wife Margaret Jenks Heckman: three sons: Drew Heckman of Atlanta; James Heckman of Washington, DC; Henry Heckman of Hong Kong; a grandson, Houston Heckman; and a sister, Lisa Hughes, of Washington, DC.; and daughters-in-law Allen Clare Heckman and Brooke Heckman.
