HAROLD LEVY Obituary

LEVY-- Harold O.,

65, died November 27, 2018 of ALS. Brilliant, modest, and kind, a true mensch and mentor. Innovative New York City Schools Chancellor from 2000-2002, Executive Director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation from 2014 until his illness forced him to step down earlier this year. At JKCF, he changed the conversation around education equity, focusing on the challenges of low income students. He was honored by New York City in June of 2018, with the naming of his former middle school, IS 52 in Inwood, as the Harold O. Levy School. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Pat Sapinsley, daughter, Hannah and son, Noah. There will be no funeral but a memorial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Harold O. Levy School 52 at https://www.fundforpublicschools.org/harold-levy-donation/ or MacAngels, an organization that helps ALS families https://macangels.org/donate/

In another life, 25 years ago, I spent a lot of time with Harold, as my counsel at Salomon Brothers. I valued his wisdom and sense of humor, at a time when I needed both. I am deeply saddened to see him pass.

Harold was a friend during that treacherous first year at Cornell Law School in 1974-75. We were sad when he told us he would be going to Oxford the following year and would not graduate with us in the Class of '77. But the sadness of a 23 year old is nothing compared to how we now feel our great loss.
HIs life did so much good for both those who knew him personally and those who benefitted from his contributions to education and bridging economic inequity.
He was a mensch, a wit, and a visionary. His memory is a blessing.
